3rd September 2021 Unst NW3 Overcast

A beautiful calm and clear dawn with Holsens road lined by Meadow Pipits and White Wagtails made me wonder whether I was doing the right thing heading straight to Lamba Ness but the cloud soon arrived and the northwesterly wind picked up. I seawatched from 6.30am until steady drizzle and poor visibility set in at 9am seeing a Storm Petrel, 11 Sooty Shearwaters, 6 Kittiwakes, 8 Bonxies and 5 Puffins all flying north. A look at Skaw and then some sheltered spots in Norwick proved very quiet. The drizzle had cleared by lunchtime so I returned to Lamba Ness at 2pm where I was joined by Jim & Lynn for a while and sea-watched until 4.45pm seeing 15 Sooty Shearwaters, a Manx Shearwater, 7 Kittiwakes, numerous Bonxies, a superb adult Long-tailed Skua and 7 Puffins fly north and 3 Arctic Skuas fly south.
