Systematic List

We have attempted, where possible, to assign species to a subspecies level based primarily on ranges using Birds of the World: A Checklist, Fifth Edition (2000) by J.F. Clements, Birds of the High Andes, First Edition (1990) by J. Fjeldsa & N. Krabbe, The Birds of South America Vols. I & II, First Editions (1989) (1994) by R.S. Ridgely & G. Tudor and Handbook of the Birds of the World Vols. 1 - 6, (1992 - 2001) by J. del Hoyo, A. Elliott and J. Sargatal. Taxonomy largely follows Birds of the World: A Checklist, Fifth Edition (2000) by J.F. Clements.

Better than expected. Magellanic Plover is classified as Near-threatened by BirdLife (2000) which states 'the destruction and degradation of natural grassland in Patagonia by grazing livestock and introduced herbivores must have had some impact on mainland breeding habitat, and numbers are perhaps limited by the carrying capacity of the hostile environment'.

A single individual flushed in a bog close to the mine at virtually the highest elevation you can currently drive to at El Yeso on the 20th. Although on range this individual would appear to relate to South American Snipe its altitude seems higher than would normally be expected for that species. Perhaps future observers should consider the possibility of Puna Snipe G. andina extending further south than is currently recognised.
