We successfully drove to Km23.5 seeing a single male Swinhoe's Pheasant but were then rewarded with views of a group of eight more that included another male and an immature male. The nearby fruiting trees failed to produce the hoped-for Island Thrush although did host some Vivid Niltavas. We continued downhill to Km12 where a bridge crosses a river in an agricultural area with remnants of secondary growth. This area produced our first pair of Taiwan Scimitar-Babblers and our only pair of Black-naped Monarchs. We tried the bamboo trail at the summit but to no avail. On driving past Km47 at dusk we again saw the pair of Mikado Pheasants.
