We caught the early morning National Park bus to Lake Periyar where we met a ranger and crossed an arm of the lake on a raft and walked a number of trails through good forest. Highlights included a male Malabar Trogon, several White-bellied Blue Flycatchers, a few Orange-headed Thrushes and a flock of White-bellied Treepies. We then walked part of the way back finding a nice mixed-species flock that included a few Western Crowned Warblers before we waved down a bus back to town. After lunch we returned to the same general area as yesterday afternoon although concentrated around the village fields seeing Malabar Grey Hornbill, another Orange-headed Thrush and an Indian Pitta in a small garden! At dusk we enjoyed the spectacle of a large number of Fruit Bats leaving the forest to feed.

Split by some as Nilgiri Imperial Pigeon with Rasmussen (2005) noting that it requires further study as whilst it is fairly distinct morphologically, its vocalisations remain poorly understood.
