16th December 2018 Munnar, Bodi Ghat to Periyar Tiger Reserve

We made a dawn departure from Munnar, seeing another two Nilgiri Woodpigeon close by. As we descended from Munnar we made a brief stop at an area of bamboo and saw a flock of Indian Rufous Babblers. We then made the detour to Bodi Ghat where we walked the road seeing a pair of the range-restricted Yellow-throated Bulbuls. After retracing our steps we were on our way to Periyar Tiger Reserve where we spent the afternoon walking near the HQ, accompanied by a ranger, to a grassy clearing. Our progress was hampered as we encountered an Elephant, but once successfully circumnavigated, we saw several Malabar Large Woodshrikes, 3 Malabar White-headed Starlings and, just before dusk, we encountered a fast-moving mixed-species flock that included a flock of Wynaad Laughingthrushes and at least one White-bellied Treepie.

Birdlife consider this species Vulnerable as despite its relatively large range, populations of this Bulbul are small and severely fragmented. Destruction and degradation of its habitat continue to cause population declines.
