5th October 2012 Hegura-jima SW3 Thunderstorms clearing

A loud thunderstorm passed over shortly before dawn. Walked to the Dragon's Pool via the Central Track in quite a brisk SW3 that soon moderated and clear so another hot day. We walked the southern loop including the SW beach and enclosures with 2 Wrynecks together proving the highlight. We then tried the Drinking Pool where we had missed a bathing Gray's Grasshopper Warbler by 5 minutes - damn!! We the met Ted Shimba off the ferry and saw our only Asian House Martin of the trip over the School Field and walked to Tsukasa only obtaining distant views of a Pine Bunting on the small island in the harbour although the Red-throated Pipit performed well and the only Short-eared Owl of our trip arrived on the island over our heads. We returned to the Drinking Pool but very little activity there so we had a lunchtime break before returning to the Drinking Pool when virtually immediately picked out the Gray's returning and watched it for the next five minutes - brilliant!! We returned to Tsukasa seeing the Dusky Warbler on our way shortly followed by JFC finding an obliging Radde's Warbler. On our return we found a male Siberian Rubythroat in some harbourside bushes that played hide and seek over the next hour. We returned to the Drinking Pool where the Asian Stubtail rounded off another exciting day. Spent the evening watching Kabutomushi's Fairy Pitta videos obtained on Hegura during late May.
