Sabah 20^th June to the 10^th July 1993

 

Darter - Anhinga melanogaster melanogaster C

A single individual was watched drying itself whilst sat on a large fallen tree just downstream of the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 29^th.

 

Christmas Island Frigatebird - Fregata andrewsi C

Two immatures were seen at close range from the shelter at the end of the jogging track on Palau Manukan during gale force winds on the 9^th.

 

Lesser Frigatebird - Fregata ariel C

Good views were obtained of a male from the shelter at the end of the jogging track on Palau Manukan and around 15 female/immatures were seen at varying distances which were almost certainly this species. They were all seen in gale force winds on the 9^th.

 

Great-billed Heron - Ardea sumatrana sumatrana C

A single individual was seen fishing from under a tree just below the helipad on the edge of the clearing just upstream of the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 29^th.

 

Purple Heron - Ardea purpurea manilensis C

At the Likas Bay Pools on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu 3 were seen on the 8^th and 1 on the 10^th.

 

Great Egret - Ardea alba modesta C

At Likas Bay totals of 19 were seen on the 8^th and 12 on the 10^th.

 

Intermediate Egret - Egretta intermedia intermedia C

On the Likas Bay Pools 6 were seen on the 8^th and 2 on the 10^th.

 

Little Egret - Egretta garzetta nigripes C

Seen at the Likas Bay Pools where 15 were seen on both of our visits.

 

Pacific Reef-Heron - Egretta sacra sacra C

A single individual was seen on both visits to Likas Bay at the river outlet just to the south of the pools. From Palau Manukan 2 were seen fishing from buoys on the 10^th.

 

Striated Heron - Butorides striatus javanicus C

At the river outlet just south of the Likas Bay pools 5 were seen on the 8^th and 4 on the 10^th.

 

Cinnamon Bittern - Ixobrychus cinnamomeus C

On the journey from Poring Hot Springs to Kota Kinabalu 2 were seen in flight from the bus not far outside Kota Kinabalu on the 8^th.

 

Bat Hawk - Macheiramphus alcinus alcinus C

A pair were seen at their daytime roost in a large tree visible from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 22^nd and 24^th with 1 seen there on the 28^th and presumably 1 of the pair was seen hunting over the clearing at dusk on the 22^nd. Superb.

 

White-bellied Sea-Eagle - Haliaeetus leucogaster C

A single individual was seen in flight over the channel between Kota Kinabalu and the offshore islands from the docks on the 9^th.

 

Mountain (Kinabalu) Serpent-Eagle - Spilornis kinabaluensis C

A single adult was seen in flight over the forest at the lower end of the Silau Silau Trail visible from the road near the Canteen on the 5^th.

 

Crested Goshawk - Accipiter trivirgatus microstictus C

Singles were seen on three dates at Danum Valley in the clearing and from the Observation Tower along the entrance road.

 

Besra - Accipiter virgatus rufotibialis C

A single individual was seen in flight over the road near the Canteen on the 4^th.

 

Black Eagle - Ictinaetus malayensis malayensis C

A pair were seen in flight over the forest viewed from the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 27^th and 1 was seen from the Kiau View Trail at Mt. Kinabalu on the 5^th.

 

Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle - Spizaetus alboniger C

Singles were seen in flight at the Genting Highlands near Kuala Lumpur on the 20^th, perched at close range in the forest along the Waterfall Trail at Danum Valley on the 26^th and from the Bukit Tupai Shelter at Mt. Kinabalu on the 1^st.

 

Black-thighed Falconet - Microhierax fringillarius C

A presumed family party comprising of 3 individuals were watched chasing and catching large Butterflies down to a few yards from us along the Old Road leading up to the Genting Highlands Resort on the 20^th. Superb.

 

White-fronted Falconet - Microhierax latifrons C

We saw 2 at Danum Valley with 1 seen from the Observation Tower along the entrance road on the 27^th and 1 in the clearing on our last morning being the 30^th.

 

Tabon Scrubfowl - Megapodius cumingii cumingii C

Around 5 were seen briefly both on the ground and in flight on Palau Manukan on the 9^th and a pair were watched on the trail for several minutes the following early morning. The birds were prepared to fly far more readily than expected.

 

Crimson-headed Partridge - Haematortyx sanguiniceps C

A highlight of the trip was encountering a pair crossing the Mempening trail in front of us at Mt. Kinabalu on the 4^th. Superb.

 

Crested Partridge (Roulroul) - Rollulus rouloul C

A total of 14 birds were seen over four dates at Danum Valley with encounters along the Rhino Ridge trail, the Nature Trail and the Main Trail West. Also Superb.

 

Crested Fireback - Lophura ignita nobilis C

At Danum Valley a single male crossed the very start of the Main Trail West twice in front of us on the 23^rd and a pair allowed excellent views at about West 3 on the 27^th.

 

Great Argus - Argusianus argus grayi C

An immature male was seen for several minutes ahead of us around two-thirds of the way along the Coffin Trail at Danum Valley on the 29^th. Superb.

 

White-breasted Waterhen - Amaurornis phoenicurus phoenicurus C

Singles were seen on both visits to the Likas Bay Pools.

 

White-browed Crake - Porzana cinerea C

A total of 4 were seen at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th appearing aggressive towards each other with both sightings relating to birds chasing each other.

 

Common Moorhen - Gallinula chloropus C

Around 5 were seen on both visits to the Likas Bay Pools where they were breeding with a small chick being seen there.

 

Pacific Golden Plover - Pluvialis fulva C

A single individual in non-breeding plumage was seen at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th.

 

Mongolian (Lesser) Sandplover - Charadrius mongolus C

We saw 4 in non-breeding plumage at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th.

 

Greater Sandplover - Charadrius leschenaultii leschenaultii C

We saw 2 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 6 there on the 10^th with all birds being in non-breeding plumage.

 

Whimbrel - Numenius phaeopus variegatus C

A single individual was seen at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th.

 

Common Redshank - Tringa totanus C

A single individual was seen at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th.

 

Marsh Sandpiper - Tringa stagnatilis C

We saw 4 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 3 there on the 10^th.

 

Greenshank - Tringa nebularia C

We saw 3 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 2 there on the 10^th.

 

Wood Sandpiper - Tringa glareola C

A single individual was seen at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th.

 

Common Sandpiper - Actitis hypoleucos C

We saw 1 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 2 there on the 10^th.

 

Grey-tailed Tattler - Heterosceles brevipes C

A single individual in non-breeding plumage was seen at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th.

 

Red-necked Stint - Calidris ruficollis C

We saw 4 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 60 there on the 10^th. All appeared to be adults in non-breeding plumage.

 

Black-naped Tern - Sterna sumatrana sumatrana C

A pair were seen around a red marker buoy in Likas Bay on the 8^th.

 

Little Tern - Sterna albifrons sinensis C

We saw 2 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 3 there on the 10^th.

 

White-winged Tern - Chlidonias leucopterus C

A single winter-plumaged individual was watched feeding over the sea at Likas Bay on the 8^th.

 

Spotted Dove - Streptopelia chinensis tigrina C

Up to 25 were seen on our four days around Kota Kinabalu.

 

Ruddy Cuckoo-Dove - Macropygia emiliana borneensis C

At Poring Hot Springs we obtained flight views of 2 individuals on both the 7^th and 8^th.

 

Little Cuckoo-Dove - Macropygia ruficeps nana C

Up to 10 were seen daily around the Mt. Kinabalu HQ. Often only seen in the late afternoons with views usually limited to birds in flight although a couple were seen perched. 

 

Emerald Dove - Chalcophaps indica indica C

We obtained brief views of 2 along the Coffin Trail at Danum Valley and a more obliging individual was seen on the Manukan Trail on Palau Manukan on the 9^th.

 

Zebra Dove - Geopelia striata C

Seen in the vicinity of the Likas Bay Pools where 1 was seen on the 8^th and 4 on the 10^th.

 

Little Green-Pigeon - Treron olax C

Small flocks were only seen in flight at Danum Valley on four dates with a total of 28 seen.

 

Pink-necked Green-Pigeon - Treron vernans C

Singles were seen on both days spent on Palau Manukan.

 

Large Green-Pigeon - Treron capellei C

A single individual was watched calling from a dead tree by a tree fall along the Waterfall Trail at Danum Valley on the 28^th.

 

Green Imperial-Pigeon - Ducula aenea aenea C

Up to 15 were seen on eight dates at Danum Valley and up to 10 were seen on Palau Manukan on our two days there.

 

Mountain Imperial-Pigeon - Ducula badia badia C

We saw just 2 in large trees near the Administration Building at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Blue-rumped Parrot - Psittinus cyanurus cyanurus C

Seen from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley with 15 seen on the 24^th and 18 on the 27^th.

 

Blue-crowned Hanging-Parrot - Loriculus galgulus C

At Danum Valley we obtained poor views of 2 along the Nature Trail on the 22^nd and good views of 8 from the Observation Tower along the entrance road on the 24^th.

 

Oriental Cuckoo - Cuculus saturatus lepidus C

At Mt. Kinabalu we saw 1 on the lower section of the Summit trail on the 2^nd and 1 along the Power Station road on the 5^th.

 

Black-bellied Malkoha - Phaenicophaeus diardi borneensis C

A single individual was seen from the Observation Tower along the Nature Trail at Danum Valley on the 26^th.

 

Green-billed Malkoha - Phaenicophaeus tristis longicaudatus C

A single individual was seen along the Old Road at the Genting Highlands near Kuala Lumpur on the 20^th.

 

Raffle’s Malkoha - Phaenicophaeus chlorophaeus chlorophaeus C

Seen in small numbers at Danum Valley on four dates with a daily maximum of 5 seen on the 22^nd.

 

Chestnut-breasted Malkoha - Phaenicophaeus curvirostris microrhinus C

Only a total of 5 individuals seen over four dates whilst at Danum Valley.

 

Short-toed Coucal - Centropus rectunguis C

A single individual was found skulking in dense vegetation in the West 5 gully at Danum Valley on the 25^th.

 

Greater Coucal - Centropus sinensis bubutus C

Up to 4 were seen on eight dates whilst at Danum Valley.

 

Reddish Scops Owl – Otus rufescens

Two different individuals were heard calling along the entrance road to Danum Valley but unfortunately remained unseen.

 

Buffy Fish-Owl - Ketupa ketupa C

Seen on five dates whilst at Danum Valley with all sightings at the floodlit Badminton Courts or along the Nature Trail with 2 birds seen together on some occasions. One of the undoubted highlights of the trip as they fed at such  close range yet remained unconcerned by our prescence.

 

Waterfall (Giant) Swiftlet - Hydrochous gigas C

A single individual of this large Swiftlet was seen just below Laban Rata Guesthouse.

 

Glossy Swiftlet - Aerodramus esculenta cyanoptila C

Seen on twelve dates in fair numbers at the Genting Highlands, Danum Valley, Mount Kinabalu, Poring Hot Springs and around Kota Kinabalu. Cave Swiftlet A.linchi may have unfortunately been overlooked as this species at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Black-nest Swiftlet - Aerodramus maximus lowi C

The only species of Swiftlet included on the Danum Valley checklist so we tentatively identified up to 20 individuals seen daily mainly from the Suspension Bridge as this species.

 

Silver-rumped Needletail - Rhaphidura leucopygialis C

We saw 4 along the Old Road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and up to 12 were seen daily at Danum Valley with some fine views being obtained below eye-level from the Suspension Bridge and finally a single individual was seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on the 8^th. Superb.

 

Brown-backed Needletail - Hirundapus giganteus giganteus C

A single individual was seen from the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 27^th. It appeared almost like a small Peregrine at times!

 

House Swift - Apus nipalensis subfurcatus C

We saw 50 at Kuala Lumpur on the 20^th and up to 8 at Kota Kinabalu on three dates.

 

Grey-rumped Treeswift - Hemiprocne longipennis harterti C

We saw 10 along the Old Road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and up to 12 were seen at Danum Valley on four dates.

 

Whiskered Treeswift - Hemiprocne comata comata C

We watched a pair perched and in flight from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 27^th and 1 was seen there the following day.

 

Red-naped Trogon - Harpactes kasumba impavidus C

Pairs were seen at the start of the Nature Trail and along the Main West Trail at Danum Valley on the 22^nd and a male was again seen at about West 5 on the 29^th.

 

Diard’s Trogon - Tharpactes diardii diardii C

A male was seen along the Nature Trail at Danum Valley on the 22^nd and a pair were seen from the Observation Tower along the Nature Trail on the 26^th.

 

Whitehead’s Trogon - Harpactes whiteheadi C

A family party of 3 were seen along the Liwagu River Trail at Mt. Kinabalu on the 1^st having spent virtually the whole day looking for them. The male was spectacular.

 

Scarlet-rumped Trogon - Harpactes duvaucelii C

A male was seen perched very low at West 5 at Danum Valley on the 29^th.

 

Blue-eared Kingfisher - Alcedo meninting verreauxii C

A single individual was seen perched behind the small lily pond at Danum Valley on three different occasions on the 27^th.

 

Stork-billed Kingfisher - Pelargopsis capensis inominata C

A single individual was seen perched on a large dead tree visible from the suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 25^th.

 

White-throated (Smyrna) Kinfisher - Halcyon smyrnensis perpulchra C

We saw 2 on roadside wires near Kuala Lumpur on the 20^th.

 

Collared Kingfisher - Todirhamphus chloris laubmanniana C

A single individual was seen near the Kota Kinabalu Airport on the 21^st, a pair were seen on both visits to the Likas Bay Pools and a pair were seen on both days on Palau Manukan.

 

Red-bearded Bee-eater - Nyctyornis amictus C

A superb male was watched at close range near the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 22^nd and a family party of 3 were seen hunting in large trees at the Poring Hot Springs clearing on the 8^th.

 

Rhinoceros Hornbill - Buceros rhinoceros rhinoceros / borneoensis C

A pair of rhinoceros were seen along the old road at the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and at Danum Valley borneoensis were seen along the entrance road with a family party of 3 seen on the 24^th and 4 seen on the 27^th. Superb.

 

Great Hornbill - Buceros bicornis C

A fine pair were seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Helmeted Hornbill – Rhinoplax vigil

Two birds were heard calling along the Waterfall Trail at Danum Valley but sadly remained out of view.

 

Bushy-crested Hornbill - Anorrhinus galeritus C

A party of 7 were seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and at Danum Valley it proved to be the most conspicuous Hornbill with a total of 48 individuals logged over seven dates although clearly much duplication was involved. Finally a pair were seen in flight at Poring Hot Springs on the 8^th.

 

Wrinkled Hornbill - Aceros corrugatus C

At Danum Valley a pair were seen in a fruiting tree along the Rhino Ridge Trail on the 24^th and 3 were seen along the Main West Trail on the 27^th.

 

Wreathed Hornbill - Aceros undulatus C

At Danum Valley a party of 5 were seen along the Main Trail West on the 23^rd, 10 were seen from the Observation Tower along the entrance road on the 24^th, 20 from there on the 27^th and 3 on the 28^th proving more obvious in flight in the afternoons.

 

Red-throated Barbet – Megalaima mystacophanos JFC

JFC obtained good views of a single individual along the Waterfall Trail at Poring Hot Springs on the 7^th.

 

Mountain Barbet - Megalaima monticola C

A single individual was seen near the Bukit Burung Shelter along the Mempening Trail at Mt. Kinabalu on the 6^th.

 

Golden-naped Barbet - Megalaima pulcherrima C

Heard frequently at Mt. Kinabalu but good views were only obtained along the Summit trail where 2 were seen on the 2^nd and 1 on the 3^rd.

 

Brown Barbet - Calorhamphus fuliginosus tertius C

A party of 5 were seen in the Danum Valley clearing on the 23^rd and a party of 3 were seen in the Poring Hot Springs clearing on the 8^th.

 

Rufous Piculet - Sasia abnormis abnormis C

Singles were seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and along the Coffin Trail at Danum Valley on the 29^th.

 

Grey-capped / Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker - Picoides canicapillus / moluccensis

A single individual seen briefly outside Kota Kinabalu Airport on the 21^st was tentatively identified as Grey-capped although habitat and range would perhaps suggest Sunda and therefore best left unidentified.

 

Rufous Woodpecker - Celeus brachyurus badiosus C

A single individual showed well at West 5 at Danum Valley on the 29^th. It was part of an impressive mixed-species flock encountered there.

 

Crimson-winged Woodpecker - Picus puniceus observandus C

A single individual was seen along the Old Road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Checker-throated Woodpecker - Picus mentalis humei C

Singles were seen at West 5 at Danum Valley on the 29^th and on four dates whilst birding the trails in the vicinity of the Mt. Kinabalu HQ.

 

Olive-backed Woodpecker - Dinopium rafflesii dulitense C

A single individual kept low at around West 3 at Danum Valley on the 25^th.

 

Maroon Woodpecker - Blythipicus rubiginosus C

A superb individual was seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on the 7^th.

 

Orange-backed Woodpecker - Reinwardtipicus validus xanthopygius C

Pairs were seen along the Main West trail, the Rhino Ridge trail and the Waterfall trail at Danum Valley on four dates. Superb.

 

Buff-rumped Woodpecker - Meiglyptes tristis grammithorax C

Only seen along the Nature trail at Danum Valley where 3 were seen on the 22^nd and 2 on the 23^rd.

 

Buff-necked Woodpecker - Meiglyptes tukki tukki C

At Danum Valley we encountered several small parties with 3 seen from the Observation Tower on the Nature Trail and 3 at West 2 on the 26^th and 6 along the Coffin trail and 4 at West 5 on the 27^th.

 

Grey-and-buff Woodpecker - Hemicircus concretus sordidus C

Singles were seen along the Orchid trail and from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 27^th.

 

Great Slaty Woodpecker - Mulleripicus pulverulentus pulverulentus C

A party of 4 favoured the large trees around the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley being seen on the 22^nd, 24^th and 28^th.

 

Black-and-red Broadbill - Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos macrorhynchos C

A pair were seen just downstream from the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 28^th and a single individual was seen at the Lily Pond there on the 30^th. At Poring Hot Springs a family party of 3 were seen in the clearing on both days there.

 

Banded Broadbill - Eurylaimus javanicus brookei C

A single individual was seen from the Observation Tower along the Nature Trail at Danum Valley on the 22^nd.

 

Black-and-yellow Broadbill - Eurylaimus ochromalus ochromalus C

A single individual was seen along the Old Road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and up to 6 were seen daily at Danum Valley where the Observation Tower along the Nature Trail proved a reliable site to obtain good views.

 

Green Broadbill - Calyptomena viridis viridis C

A single individual was part of a mixed-species flock seen at West 2 on the 23^rd and a pair were seen calling along the East Trail also being part of a mixed-species flock on the 28^th.

 

Blue-headed Pitta - Pitta baudii C

At Danum Valley a stunning male hopped towards us on the Main Trail West virtually at the entrance to the trail approaching to within c.3m before it disappeared into the undergrowth on the 23^rd and females were seen on the same trail in the evenings at West 3 on the 25^th and at the West 5 gully on the 29^th. Absolutely superb proving the best bird seen during the trip.

 

Banded Pitta – Pitta guajana

Heard at both Danum Valley and Poring Hot Springs but sadly not seen.

 

Black-headed Pitta - Pitta ussheri C

At Danum Valley singles were seen on three dates between West 0 and West 5 with many others heard there.

 

Barn Swallow - Hirundo rustica C

We saw 15 at the Likas Bay Pools on the 8^th and 4 there on the 10^th.

 

Pacific Swallow - Hirundo tahitica abbotti C

We saw c.40 around Kuala Lumpur on the 20^th, up to 15 daily at Danum Valley and c.400 along the coast at Likas Bay during the evening of the 8^th and 10 seen there on the 10^th.

 

Paddyfield Pipit - Anthus rufulus malayensis C

We saw 6 around the Kota Kinabalu Airport on the 21^st and 1 was seen on the Lahad Datu Airfield on the 30^th.

 

Sunda Cuckoo-shrike - Coracina larvata normani C

A pair were seen along the Liwagu River Trail at Mt. Kinabalu forming part of a mixed-species flock on the 6^th.

 

Bar-bellied Cuckoo-shrike - Coracina striata sumatrensis C

A single individual was seen from the observation tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 24^th and another was seen at West 5 on the 29^th.

 

Pied Triller - Lalage nigra chilensis C

A pair were seen just outside the Kota Kinabalu Airport on the 21^st and two pairs were seen near the Likas Bay Pools on both our visits there.

 

Scarlet Minivet - Pericrocotus flammeus insulanus C

We saw 3 males from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 24^th.

 

Grey-chinned Minivet - Pericrocotus solaris cinereigula C

Up to 8 were seen daily at Mt. Kinabalu on five dates.

 

Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike - Hemipus picatus intermedius C

A single individual was seen along the old road to the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Black-winged Flycatcher-shrike - Hemipus hirundinaceus C

We saw 2 from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 24^th and 3 there on the 28^th.

 

Straw-headed Bulbul - Pycnonotus zeylanicus C

We saw up to 6 around the clearing at Danum Valley on four dates.

 

Black-headed Bulbul - Pycnonotus atriceps atriceps C

A pair were seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on both days spent there.

 

Black-crested Bulbul - Pycnonotus melanicterus caecilii C

We saw c.10 along the old road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Scaly-breasted Bulbul - Pycnonotus squamatus weberi C

We saw two pairs along the old road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Grey-bellied Bulbul - Pycnonotus cyaniventris cyaniventris C

A party of 3 were seen along the old road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Puff-backed Bulbul - Pycnonotus eutilotus C

A party of 4 were seen along the Nature Trail at Danum Valley on the 26^th.

 

Stripe-throated Bulbul - Pycnonotus finlaysoni finlaysoni C

We saw c.10 in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Flavescent Bulbul - Pycnonotus flavescens leucos C

A party of 3 were seen on the Summit trail just above the Power Station on Mt. Kinabalu on the 2^nd.

 

Yellow-vented Bulbul - Pycnonotus goiavier gourdini C

Seen in fair numbers virtually daily whilst at Danum Valley, Palau Manukan and Kota Kinabalu.

 

Olive-winged Bulbul - Pycnonotus plumosus C

Only seen on Palau Manukan where we saw 20 on the 9^th and 4 on the 10^th.

 

Red-eyed Bulbul - Pycnonotus brunneus brunneus C

We saw up to 10 daily in the Genting Highlands, Danum Valley and at Poring Hot Springs.

 

Ochraceous Bulbul - Alophoixus ochraceus C

We saw up to 5 on six dates at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Grey-cheeked Bulbul - Alophoixus bres gutteralis C

A pair were seen along the Waterfall trail at Poring Hot Springs on the 8^th.

 

Yellow-bellied Bulbul - Alophoixus phaeocephalus C

A total of 10 were noted over four dates at Danum Valley often being encountered along the Nature Trail.

 

Hairy-backed Bulbul - Tricholestes criniger viridis C

We saw up to 3 virtually daily at Danum Valley.

 

Lesser Green Leafbird - Chloropsis cyanopogon cyanopogon C

Up to 20 were seen daily at Danum Valley.

 

Sunda Whistling-Thrush - Myophonus glaucinus borneensis C

A single individual was seen along the lower section of the Silau Silau Trail on the 1^st and an adult was watched feeding an immature near the Mt. Kinabalu Administration block on the 5^th.

 

Island Thrush - Turdus poliocephalus seebohmi C

We saw c.12 on the climb to the Laban Rata Guesthouse on Mt. Kinabalu on the 2^nd.

 

Black-breasted Fruit-hunter - Chlamydochaera jefferyi C

Males were seen around 300m above the first shelter along the Summit trail on the 2^nd and along the Kiau View Trail near the entrance of the Mt. Kinabalu NP on the 5^th. Superb.

 

Bornean Stubtail - Urosphena whiteheadi C

We saw single individuals along the Silau Silau Trail and along the Liwagu River Trail in the Mt. Kinabalu NP on the 1^st. Superb.

 

Sunda Bush-Warbler - Cettia vulcania oreophila C

We saw up to 8 on six dates at Mt. Kinabalu including several around the Laban Rata Guesthouse whilst searching for the Friendly Warbler.

 

Friendly Bush-Warbler - Bradypterus accentor C

Taped into view near the Laban Rata Guesthouse with 4 seen during the afternoon of the 2^nd and 2 seen the following morning. Could be heard singing from the Guesthouse as it was getting dark.

 

Mountain Tailorbird - Orthotomus cuculatus cinereicollis C

At Mt. Kinabalu we saw a total of 7 over five dates.

 

Dark-necked Tailorbird - Orthotomus atrogularis humphreysi C

We saw a pair in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on our two days spent there.

 

Rufous-tailed Tailorbird - Orthotomus sericeus sericeus C

We saw a total of 5 at Danum Valley being seen on three dates there and a single individual was seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on the 8^th.

 

Ashy Tailorbird - Orthotomus ruficeps borneoensis C

We saw a pair from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 24^th, 1 along the Coffin Trail on the 29^th and JFC saw a pair on Palau Manukan on the 9^th.

 

Mountain Leaf Warbler - Phylloscopus trivirgatus kinabaluensis C

We saw up to 20 on a day at Mt. Kinabalu being seen on seven dates.

 

Yellow-breasted Warbler - Seicercus montis montis C

At Mt. Kinabalu we saw up to 10 on a day on six dates.

 

Yellow-bellied Warbler - Abroscopus superciliaris sakaiorum C

We saw 3 in bamboo along the Old road in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Eyebrowed Jungle-Flycatcher - Rhinomyias gularis C

We saw what were presumably 2 males disputing their territories along the Liwagu River Trail at Mt. Kinabalu on the 6^th.

 

Snowy-browed Flycatcher - Ficedula hyperythra sumatrana C

A pair were seen at dawn along the Silau Silau trail on the 4^th and a male was seen at midday along the Mempening trail on the 6^th.

 

Little Pied Flycatcher - Ficedula westermanni westermanni C

At Mt. Kinabalu males were seen outside the Administration block on the 1^st and around a mile’s walk above the Power Station along the summit trail on the 3^rd. Superb.

 

Verditer Flycatcher - Eumyias thalassina thalassoides C

A single individual was seen from the Observation Tower along the entrance road to Danum Valley on the 28^th.

 

Indigo Flycatcher - Eumyias indigo cerviniventris C

We saw up to 5 on a day on five dates at Mt. Kinabalu. Superb.

 

Large-billed Blue-Flycatcher - Cyornis caerulatus caerulatus C

At Danum Valley a male was seen at West 2 on the 23^rd and 24^th and another male was seen along the Rhino Ridge Trail just after leaving the west 5 gully on the 29^th.

 

Malaysian Blue-Flycatcher - Cyornis turcosus turcosus C

A male was seen in trees behind the Danum Valley Field Centre hall on the 26^th and presumably the same bird was seen near the Suspension Bridge at the start of the Nature Trail on the 28^th and another male was seen from the main Suspension Bridge over the Segama River on the same day.

 

Bornean Blue-Flycatcher - Cyornis superbus C

A male was watched singing for around 30 minutes by the Suspension Bridge at the start of the Nature Trail at Danum Valley on the 28^th and another was heard singing along the Orchid Trail.

 

Mangrove Blue Flycatcher - Cyornis rufigastra rufigastra C

An immature was seen along the Manukan Trail on Palau Manukan on the 9^th.

 

Pygmy Blue Flycatcher - Muscicapella hodgsoni sondaica C

A single male was watched for c.10 minutes characteristically flicking its wings whilst feeding along the Liwagu River Trail at Mt. Kinabalu on the 6^th. Superb.

 

Grey-headed Flycatcher - Culicicapa ceylonensis ceylonensis C

DC saw a single individual along the Rhino Ridge Trail on the 24^th.

 

Oriental Magpie-Robin - Copsychus saularis musicus / adamsi C

Seen in small numbers on eleven dates. Seen at the Genting Highlands, Danum Valley, Poring Hot Springs and on Palau Manukan.

 

White-crowned Shama - Copsychus stricklandii stricklandii C

Seen in small numbers at Danum Valley on four dates with most encounters along the Nature Trail and in the Clearing.

 

Rufous-tailed Shama - Copsychus pyrrhopygus C

Singles were seen at West 5 on the 23^rd and 25^th, at west 7 on the 23^rd and a juvenile was seen along the Coffin Trail on the 29^th.

 

Chestnut-naped Forktail - Enicurus ruficapillus C

Singles were seen on three dates in gullies along the Main Trail West at Danum Valley.

 

White-crowned Forktail - Enicurus leschenaulti borneensis C

A confiding individual was watched for 30 minutes along the Liwagu River at Mt. Kinabalu on the 4^th.

 

White-throated Fantail - Rhipidura albicollis kinabalu C

Up to 15 were seen on a day at Mt. Kinabalu on seven dates.

 

Pied Fantail - Rhipidura javanica longicauda C

A pair were seen just outside the Kota Kinabalu Airport on the 21^st and up to 8 were seen on both days at Palau Manukan.

 

Black-naped Monarch - Hypothymis azurea prophata C

At Danum Valley a single male was seen at West 10 on the 27^th.

 

Asian Paradise-Flycatcher - Terpsiphone paradisi affinis / borneensis C

A male was seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and a female was seen forming part of a mixed species flock along the Main Trail East at Danum Valley on the 28^th.

 

Mangrove Whistler - Pachycephala grisola C

We saw 3 along the Manukan Trail on Palau Manukan on the 9^th and it was heard there the following day.

 

Bornean Whistler - Pachycephala hypoxantha hypoxantha C

Up to 6 were seen on a day on six dates at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Sunda Laughingthrush - Garrulax palliatus schistochlamys C

At Mt. Kinabalu we saw up to 25 on a day around the HQ buildings often proving most conspicuous just after dawn.

 

Black Laughingthrush - Garrulax lugubris calvus C

At Mt. Kinabalu a pair were seen just outside the Administration Block, accompanying a mixed-species flock, just after dawn on the 6^th.

 

Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush - Garrulax mitratus treacheri C

Up to 50 were seen on a day on seven dates around the Mt. Kinabalu HQ.

 

White-chested Babbler - Trichastoma rostratum macropterum C

We taped 4 into view along the Nature Trail at Danum Valley on the 22^nd with another seen on the 26^th.

 

Ferruginous Babbler - Trichastoma bicolor C

At Danum Valley we saw 1 along the Rhino Ridge Trail on the 24^th, 4 at West 2 on the 25^th and a pair on the Main West Trail on the 27^th.

 

Horsfield’s Babbler - Malacocincla sepiarium harterti C

A single individual was seen near West 7 at Danum Valley on the 27^th.

 

Short-tailed Babbler - Malacocincla malaccensis poliogenys C

A total of 6 were seen over four dates at Danum Valley with encounters along the Main Trail West and the Rhino Ridge Trail.

 

Black-capped Babbler - Pellorneum capistratum morrelli C

A total of 4 individuals were seen over three dates at Danum Valley with encounters along the Main Trail West and the Waterfall Trail. Superb.

 

Moustached Babbler - Malacopteron magnirostre cinereocapillum C

At Danum Valley we saw 4 over three dates along the Main Trail West.

 

Sooty-capped Babbler - Malacopteron affine phoeniceum C

At Danum Valley we saw a pair from the Observation Tower along the entrance road on two dates and 6 along the Main Trail West on the 25^th.

 

Scaly-crowned Babbler - Malacopteron cinereum cinereum C

At Danum Valley we saw a pair along the Rhino Ridge Trail on the 24^th and 4 along the Coffin Trail on the 29^th and at Poring Hot Springs we saw a pair along the Waterfall Trail on the 8^th.

 

Rufous-crowned Babbler - Malacopteron magnum C

Up to 16 were seen daily whilst at Danum Valley.

 

Bornean Wren-Babbler - Ptilocichla leucogrammica C

At Danum Valley a pair were watched for c.30 minutes as they probed into crevices at the West 8 Gully on the 23^rd. One of the highlights of the trip.

 

Striped Wren-Babbler - Kenopia striata C

At Danum Valley a pair were seen along the Nature Trail on the 26^th, 1 along the Waterfall Trail on the 26^th and a pair along the Main Trail East on the 28^th.

 

Black-throated Wren-Babbler - Napothera atrigularis C

At Danum Valley a pair were watched calling from the top of a large fallen tree trunk at c.West 10 South 3 near the exit of the Rhino Ridge Trail on the 24^th. Superb.

 

Mountain Wren-Babbler - Napothera crassa C

A single individual was watched motionless along the Silau Silau Trail at Mt. Kinabalu on the 1^st.

 

Grey-throated Babbler - Stachyris nigriceps C

JFC saw a single individual amongst a mixed species flock along the Main Trail East at Danum Valley on the 28^th and up to 10 on a day were seen at Mt. Kinabalu on five dates.

 

Grey-headed Babbler - Stachyris poliocephala C

At Danum Valley we saw 1 along the West 5 gully on the 25^th and a pair at the same place on the 29^th.

 

Chestnut-rumped Babbler – Stachyris maculata JFC

JFC saw a pair bathing in a small stream along the Waterfall Trail on the 26^th and saw a party of 4 along the Main Trail East on the 28^th.

 

Chestnut-winged Babbler - Stachyris erythroptera bicolor C

A party of 4 were seen at Danum Valley on the 22^nd.

 

Striped Tit-Babbler - Macronous gularis C

A pair were seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and singles were seen on two dates in the clearing at Danum Valley. The two subspecies appeared markedly different.

 

White-browed Shrike-Babbler - Pteruthius flaviscapis robinsoni C

A male and 2 females were seen along the Summit Trail above the Power Station at Mt. Kinabalu on the 2^nd.

 

Mountain Fulvetta - Alcippe peracensis peracensis C

A pair were seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Chestnut-crested Yuhina - Yuhina everetti C

At Mt. Kinabalu up to 40 were seen on a day on five dates often being encountered around the HQ buildings in mobile flocks.

 

Velvet-fronted Nuthatch - Sitta frontalis corralipes C

DC saw a single individual in a mixed-species flock along the Liwagu River Trail on the 6^th.

 

Ruby-cheeked Sunbird - Chalcoparia singalensis borneana C

A total of 8 were seen over four dates in the forest at Danum Valley with adults seen attending juveniles.

 

Plain-throated Sunbird - Anthreptes malacensis borneensis C

We saw up to 4 on Palau Manukan on the 9^th and a pair at the Likas Bay Pools on the 10^th.

 

Red-throated Sunbird – Anthreptes rhodolaema JFC

JFC saw a pair along the Rhino Ridge Trail on the 29^th.

 

Purple-naped Sunbird - Hypogramma hypogrammicum hypogrammicum C

A total of 11 seen over four dates often being encountered in forest clearings at Danum Valley.

 

Purple-throated Sunbird - Leptocoma sperata brasiliana C

Fine males were seen from the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on the 27^th and from the Observation Tower along the entrance road the next day.

 

Temminck’s Sunbird - Aethppyga temminckii C

A total of 8 were seen over four dates at Mt. Kinabalu often being seen around the HQ buildings.

 

Spectacled Spiderhunter - Arachnothera flavigaster C

Singles were seen on two dates in the Danum Valley clearing.

 

Little Spiderhunter - Arachnothera longirostra buettikoferi C

Singles were seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on both days.

 

Yellow-eared Spiderhunter - Arachnothera chrysogenys C

A single individual was seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on the 7^th.

 

Grey-breasted Spiderhunter - Arachnothera modesta modesta  C

We saw 4 in the clearing at Danum Valley on the 27^th and 1 on the 28^th and in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs we saw 2 on the 7^th and 1 on the 8^th.

 

Streaky-breasted (Everett’s) Spiderhunter - Arachnothera affinis everetti C

Individuals tentatively identified as this species were seen in the clearing at Poring Hot Springs on both days and along the Waterfall Trail on the 7^th.

 

Yellow-breasted Flowerpecker - Prionochilus maculatus oblitus/maculatus C

We saw 2 in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th and JFC saw 1 at Danum Valley on the 23^rd.

 

Orange-bellied Flowerpecker - Dicaeum trigonostigma melanostigma/dayakanum C

Seen in the Genting Highlands, Danum Valley and at Poring Hot Springs in small numbers.

 

Black-sided Flowerpecker - Dicaeum monticolum C

A total of 8 poorly plumaged individuals were seen at Mt. Kinabalu over three dates.

 

Black-capped White-eye - Zosterops atricapillus atricapillus C

Up to 8 on a day were seen at Mt. Kinabalu on five dates.

 

Everett’s White-eye - Zosterops everetti tahanensis C

We saw 6 in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Mountain Black-eye - Chlorocharis emiliae emiliae C

Up to 40 were seen on both days spent on the Summit Trail at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Dark-throated Oriole - Oriolus xanthonotus consobrinus C

At Danum Valley pairs were seen on two dates at the Observation Tower along the entrance road and once along the Coffin Trail. At Poring Hot Springs a pair were seen in the clearing on both days spent there.

 

Black-and-crimson Oriole - Oriolus cruentus vulneratus C

A pair were part of a mixed species flock encountered along the Kiau View Trail and a single individual was seen just outside the Administration Building at Mt. Kinabalu on the 5^th.

 

Asian Fairy-bluebird - Irena puella criniger C

Seen on four dates at Danum Valley with a daily maximum of 5 seen along the East Trail on the 28^th and a pair were seen along the Waterfall Trail at Poring Hot Springs on the 8^th.

 

Large Woodshrike - Tephrodornis gularis frenatus C

A pair were seen from the Observation Tower along the entrance road at Danum Valley on two dates and a party of 4 were seen in the large clearing heading towards the Coffin Trail at Danum on the 29^th.

 

Rufous-winged Philentoma - Philentoma pyrhopterum pyrhopterum C

A total of 10 were seen over three dates whilst at Danum Valley.

 

Maroon-breasted Philentoma - Philentoma velatum caesium C

A pair were seen at West 2 at Danum Valley on the 23^rd.

 

Ashy Drongo - Dicrurus leucophaeus stigmatops C

Up to 4 were seen daily on six dates around the HQ Buildings at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Bronzed Drongo - Dicrurus aeneus malayensis C

Up to 6 were seen on six dates whilst at Danum Valley.

 

Hair-crested Drongo - Dicrurus hottentottus borneensis C

We saw up to 8 a day on six dates whilst at Mt. Kinabalu.

 

Greater Racket-tailed Drongo - Dicrurus paradiseus brachyphorus C

up to 3 on a day were seen on seven dates whilst at Danum Valley and 2 were seen at Poring on the 8^th.

 

White-breasted Woodswallow - Artamus leucorynchus leucorynchus C

Seen around Kota Kinabalu, the HQ at Mt. Kinabalu and Palau Manukan in small numbers with a daily maximum of 15 seen on Palau Manukan on the 9^th.

 

Bornean Bristlehead - Pityriasis gymnocephala C

A highlight of the trip was a pair of these strange birds watched for most of the afternoon of the 24^th as they fed in the canopy of the trees on the edge of the Danum Valley clearing directly above the entrance to the Main Trail East.

 

Crested Jay - Platylophus galericulatus coronatus C

A superb pair were seen along the Rhino Ridge Trail at Danum Valley on the 24^th and 1 was seen briefly along the West 5 Gully on the 29^th and up to 3 were seen daily at Poring Hot Springs near the first waterfall and at the back of the football pitch.

 

Short-tailed Magpie - Cissa thalassina jeffreyi C

Just a single individual seen perched in a dead tree along the Power Station Road just above the Administration Building on the 1^st.

 

Bornean Treepie - Dendrocitta cinerascens C

Up to 20 were seen daily whilst at Mt. Kinabalu and Poring Hot springs.

 

Slender-billed Crow - Corvus enca compilator C

A vocal party of 5 were seen in flight over the Segama River near the Suspension Bridge at Danum Valley on our last morning being the 30^th.

 

Large-billed Crow - Corvus macrorhynchos C

Around 40 were seen at KL airport on the 20^th.

 

Asian Glossy Starling - Aplonis panayensis C

Seen at KL, Kota Kinabalu, Poring, and Palau Manukan in fair numbers with a daily maximum of 100 seen going to roost from Palau Manukan on the 9^th.

 

Crested Myna - Acridotheres cristatellus C

We saw around 5 at the Likas Bay Pools and the nearby town on the 10^th. Presumably escapes from captivity as not mentioned in other trip reports though perhaps likely to establish in the absence of any other Mynas.

 

Jungle Myna - Acridotheres fuscus torquatus C

A single individual was seen on the outskirts of KL on the 20^th.

 

Common Myna - Acridotheres tristis tristis C

Around 60 were seen around KL on the 20^th.

 

Tree Sparrow – Passer montanus malaccensis C

Seen daily in good numbers at Kuala Lumpa, Kota Kinabalu, Danum Valley, Poring Hot Springs and on Palau Manukan but surprisingly absent from Mt. Kinabalu.

 

White-rumped Munia – Lonchura striata subsquamicollis C

Around 20 were seen in the Genting Highlands on the 20^th.

 

Chestnut Munia – Lonchura atricapilla jagori C

Only seen at Kota Kinabalu Airport where 25 were seen on the 21^st and 2 on the 8^th.

 

Dusky Munia – Lonchura fuscans C

Seen in good numbers daily at Danum Valley, Poring Hot Springs and on Palau Manukan.

 

Nutmeg Munia – Lonchura punctulata fretensis C

A single individual was seen at Kuala Lumpur Airport on the 20^th.
