The dawn chorus was dominated by a pair of duet-ting Black-billed Toucans in a Cecropia tree off the lodge viewing deck and a male Black-throated Brilliant was seen at the Hummingbird feeders. On leaving the lodge grounds we saw an Ecuadorian Piedtail and a Golden-faced Tyrannulet both feeding alongside the parking area. We walked to the start of the F.A.C.E trail and it was the turn of White-throated Toucans to serenade us! We hadn't ventured far along the trail before seeing at least 2 male Black-faced Antbirds that were briefly joined by a Black-billed Treehuinter and a female White-backed Fire-eye. Next up was a male White-backed Fire-eye with a second individual being seen along the loop trail where we enjoyed seeing some lekking male White-crowned Manakins. After a long dual with a vocalisng Short-tailed Antthrush, one of two calling at the time, we managed only the briefest of views as it quickly walked across the trail leaving us disappointed. On our return along the trail we found a mixed-species flock favouring the canopy and successfully found a Grey-tailed Piha among the flock. On emerging from the forest a Short-tailed Swift was circling overhead. We walked the Coopmans Trail in the afternoon that proved quiet but returned for another session at the Antpitta feeding station at 3pm where a Northern White-crowned Tapaculo made several appearances, and after much trying, the young lad successfully whistled-in a Short-tailed Antthrush for us that showed well - brilliant! One last surprise was finding a Grey-cheeked Thrush being only the fourth record for Wild Sumaco.
