Presumed second-winter Scandinavian Herring Gull at Ballinskelligs Bay

Considering the location, this brute of a second-winter Herring Gull with a Glaucous Gull-like bicoloured bill, deserved careful scrutiny. Whilst its staring pale eye, dark belly, primarily dark tertials, dark hindneck and upper mantle and very dark underwing coverts could all be construed as smithsonianus characters, the white bases to its tail feathers, barred undertail-coverts and barred scapulars all count against such an identification rendering it much more likely a second-winter Scandinavian Herring Gull L.a. argentatus.
