lagoon on the island of Duran Darat situated just east of Sentosa on the 23rd.
It was seen from the ferry whilst returning from St. John’s Island as it passes
closely along the shore of Duran Darat.

only a total of 6 were seen being encountered on just four dates and only at
the Pandan Estuary and on the seaward side of the Kranji Dam frequenting the
edge of the mangroves there. All three colour phases were seen.

evening of the 24th and 10 were seen there in the early morning of
the 28th.

single individual was seen to fly across the road leading to the Seragoon
Rubbish Dump on the 22nd, another flew along the road to the
Seragoon Sewage Farm the same day and another was seen fishing on a pond along
Jalan Ulu Sembawang Road which leads north off Mandai Road on the 1st.
Lesser Whistling-Duck -

single bird was flushed from a small pool just outside the main entrance to the
Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 22nd and another 4 were flushed from
lagoons behind the Sewage Farm on the 25th.

saw 2 together over the mouth of the Seragoon Estuary on the 29th.
Black-shouldered Kite -

on nine dates with a total of 17 being seen with a maximum of 5 seen along the
Jalan Ulu Sembawang road on the 1st. It was also seen in southern
Johor where it seemed fairly plentiful with 4 seen on the 30th.

daily in good numbers with a daily maximum of 50 seen over the mouth of the
Seragoon Estuary on the 1st.
White-bellied Sea-Eagle -

on ten dates with a estimated total of 25 seen. Always seen on visits to
Kranji, Upper Pierce and Lower Pierce Reservoirs and occasionally along the
coast. Also seen on St. John’s Island and at Jason’s Bay in Malaysia.
Crested Goshawk - Accipiter

An
adult was watched for c.30 minutes at the bottom of Palm Valley in the Botanic
Gardens on the 22nd. The bird was continuously flying from one tree
to another collecting sticks and returning again to a dense area of the tree
where we presumed it was nest building. The crest and dark mesial stripe were
obvious when the bird was perched.
Changeable Hawk-Eagle -

saw 2 circling around over the forest and the water at the Lower Pierce
Reservoir during the early afternoon of the 1st.
Peregrine Falcon - Falco

single individual was seen hunting and then perched on a tall Radio Mast on St.
John’s Island on the 23rd.
Barred Buttonquail - Turnix

total of 4 were seen on three dates on the area of scattered grasland at the
back of the Pig Farm along Track 10 at the Seragoon Estuary. They were often
noticed running ahead of us whilst we were walking through thin grass to and
from the best Wader areas. They often proved fairly easy to walk into the open
areas or to flush.
Slaty-breasted Rail – Rallus striatus TEC

saw one very briefly in flight on the 25th at the very northern end
of the Upper Seragoon road where it overlooks part of the Seragoon Estuary.

pair were seen at Jason’s Bay in Malaysia on an undisturbed beach. They kept to
the vegetation at the top of the beach.

Many were in full summer plumage. Superb.

on the 27th and a single individual along the road leading to the

Jalan Ulu Sembawang Road. Encountered on six dates with a total of 8 birds

Enclosure in the Botanic Gardens on the evening of the 23rd. Another
was heard along the road to the Zoo on the evening of the 2nd.

German’s Swiftlet -

form is afforded species status by Clements 2000 from Edible-nest Swiftlet. Paler-rumped
Swiftlets seen on Singapore were tentatively identified as this species.

the 29th. Superb.

Pumping Station on the 28th, 5 were seen along the Jalan Ulu
Sembawang road on the 1st and 3 were again seen there the following

Rhinoceros Hornbill -

single individual was seen circling over the Lower Pierce Reservoir before
departing south until lost to view. One of the most memorable moments was
seeing this bird seemingly attacking a similarly sized White-bellied Sea-Eagle.
Totally unexpected.
Red-crowned Barbet -

single individual was seen along the South View trail in the Bukit Timah Nature
Reserve on the 29th. Other Barbets were frequently heard but never
seen.
