21st August : Stopped at Bahrain before flying on to Singapore arriving in the early evening.

 

22nd August : Botanic Gardens and on to Seragoon rubbish tip and Sewage Farm.

 

23rd August : St. John’s Island before again trying the Botanic Gardens.

 

24th August : Bukit Batok Nature Reserve before trying Kranji Dam and pumping station area.

 

25th August : Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Changi South, Seragoon Sewage Farm and the end of the Upper Seragoon road.

 

26th August : Upper Pierce resevoir road and then Macritchie Resevoir, Thompson ridge and the Pandan Reservoir.

Grey Heron - Ardea cinerea jouyi C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 50 noted around Kranji Dam on the 24th.

 

Great-billed Heron - Ardea sumatrana sumatrana C

A single individual seen preening whilst stood on coastal rocks surrounding a lagoon on the island of Duran Darat situated just east of Sentosa on the 23rd. It was seen from the ferry whilst returning from St. John’s Island as it passes closely along the shore of Duran Darat.

 

Purple Heron - Ardea purpurea manilensis C

Seen on eight dates with a daily maximum of 12 seen in the vicinity of Kranji Pumping Station on the 28th.

 

Great Egret - Ardea alba modesta C

A single individual was seen on three dates on the lagoons behind the Sewage Farm at the Seragoon Estuary.

 

Chinese Egret - Egretta eulophotes C

A single individual was seen at the Pandan Estuary on the 26th.

 

Pacific Reef-Heron - Egretta sacra sacra C

Surprisingly only a total of 6 were seen being encountered on just four dates and only at the Pandan Estuary and on the seaward side of the Kranji Dam frequenting the edge of the mangroves there. All three colour phases were seen.

 

Striated Heron - Butorides striatus javanicus C

Seen on twelve dates with a daily maximum of 18 seen at the Pandan Estuary just east of the Pandan Reservoir on the 26th.

 

Black-crowned Night-Heron - Nycticorax nycticorax nycticorax C

A total of just 7 being seen on four dates with a daily maximum of 3 flushed from the mangroves on the seaward side of the Kranji Dam.

 

Yellow Bittern - Ixobrychus sinensis C

A single individual was seen in the vicinity of the Kranji Pumping Station on the evening of the 24th and 10 were seen there in the early morning of the 28th.

 

Cinnamon Bittern - Ixobrychus cinnamomeus C

A single individual was seen to fly across the road leading to the Seragoon Rubbish Dump on the 22nd, another flew along the road to the Seragoon Sewage Farm the same day and another was seen fishing on a pond along Jalan Ulu Sembawang Road which leads north off Mandai Road on the 1st.

 

Lesser Whistling-Duck - Dendrocygna javanica C

A single bird was flushed from a small pool just outside the main entrance to the Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 22nd and another 4 were flushed from lagoons behind the Sewage Farm on the 25th.

 

Osprey - Pandion haliaetus C

We saw 2 together over the mouth of the Seragoon Estuary on the 29th.

 

Black-shouldered Kite - Elanus caeruleus vociferus C

Seen on nine dates with a total of 17 being seen with a maximum of 5 seen along the Jalan Ulu Sembawang road on the 1st. It was also seen in southern Johor where it seemed fairly plentiful with 4 seen on the 30th.

 

Brahminy Kite - Haliastur indus intermedius C

Seen daily in good numbers with a daily maximum of 50 seen over the mouth of the Seragoon Estuary on the 1st.

 

White-bellied Sea-Eagle - Haliaeetus leucogaster C

Seen on ten dates with a estimated total of 25 seen. Always seen on visits to Kranji, Upper Pierce and Lower Pierce Reservoirs and occasionally along the coast. Also seen on St. John’s Island and at Jason’s Bay in Malaysia.

 

Crested Goshawk - Accipiter trivirgatus indicus C

An adult was watched for c.30 minutes at the bottom of Palm Valley in the Botanic Gardens on the 22nd. The bird was continuously flying from one tree to another collecting sticks and returning again to a dense area of the tree where we presumed it was nest building. The crest and dark mesial stripe were obvious when the bird was perched.

 

Changeable Hawk-Eagle - Spizaetus cirrhatus linnaeetus C

We saw 2 circling around over the forest and the water at the Lower Pierce Reservoir during the early afternoon of the 1st.

 

Peregrine Falcon - Falco peregrinus C

A single individual was seen hunting and then perched on a tall Radio Mast on St. John’s Island on the 23rd.

 

Barred Buttonquail - Turnix suscitator atrogularis C

A total of 4 were seen on three dates on the area of scattered grasland at the back of the Pig Farm along Track 10 at the Seragoon Estuary. They were often noticed running ahead of us whilst we were walking through thin grass to and from the best Wader areas. They often proved fairly easy to walk into the open areas or to flush.

 

Slaty-breasted Rail – Rallus striatus TEC


TEC saw one very briefly in flight on the 25th at the very northern end of the Upper Seragoon road where it overlooks part of the Seragoon Estuary.

 

White-breasted Waterhen - Amaurornis phoenicurus phoenicurus C

Seen every day but one in fair numbers with over 60 seen.

 

Purple Swamphen - Porphyrio porphyrio viridis C

Four adults and an immature were seen at the marshes around Kranji Pumping Station during the early morning of the 28th.

 

Common Moorhen - Gallinula chloropus orientalis C

We saw 2 at the marshes near the Kranji Pumping Station on the 28th.

 

Pacific Golden Plover - Pluvialis fulva C

Seen in good numbers on nine dates always being seen on the mudflats at Kranji and at the Seragoon and Pandan Estuaries.

 

Little Ringed Plover - Charadrius dubius C

Seen on eight dates with a daily maximum of 35 seen at the end of Upper Seragoon Road on the 25th.

 

Malaysian Plover - Charadrius peronii C

A pair were seen at Jason’s Bay in Malaysia on an undisturbed beach. They kept to the vegetation at the top of the beach.

 

Mongolian (Lesser) Sandplover - Charadrius mongolus C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 120 seen at Kranji and Seragoon on the 28th. Many were in full summer plumage. Superb.

 

Greater Sandplover - Charadrius leschenaultii leschenaultii C

We only identified 7 with sightings at Changi, Seragoon and Kranji with all birds identified being in winter plumage.

 

Black-tailed Godwit - Limosa limosa melanuroides C

We saw 10 fly over the Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 25th and 1 at the Seragoon Estuary on the 3rd and 4th.

 

Whimbrel - Numenius phaeopus variegatus C

We saw 1 at Kranji on the 31st, 2 at Seragon on the 3rd ad 1 there the following day.

 

Common Redshank - Tringa totanus C

Seen on nine dates in large numbers with a daily maximum of 1,000 at the Seragoon Estuary on the 4th.

 

Marsh Sandpiper - Tringa stagnatilis C

Seen on six dates at the Seragoon Estuary with c.20 being seen over five dates and then an arrival resulting in c.100 being seen on the 4th.

 

Greenshank - Tringa nebularia C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 10 seen at Seragoon on the 4th.

 

Wood Sandpiper - Tringa glareola C

Seen on eight dates with a daily maximum of 150 seen at Seragoon on the 4th.

 

Terek Sandpiper - Xenus cinereus C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 30 seen at Seragoon on both the 1st and 4th.

 

Common Sandpiper - Tringa hypoleucos C

Seen every day with a daily maximum of 100 seen at Seragoon on the 3rd.

 

Grey-tailed Tattler - Heterosceles brevipes C

A single individual losing its summer plumage was seen at the Seragoon Estuary on the 3rd and 4th.

 

Turnstone - Arenaria interpres interpres C

Seen at Seragoon on three dates with a daily maximum of 7 seen on the 4th.

 

Great Knot - Calidris tenuirostris C

A single individual in virtually full summer plumage was seen on the mudflats at the Seragoon Estuary on the 29th and 31st.

 

Red-necked Stint - Calidris ruficollis C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 120 seen at Seragoon on the 28th with some individuals still in good summer-plumage.

 

Long-toed Stint - Calidris subminuta C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 25 seen at Seragoon on the 4th. Mostly adults were seen.

 

Curlew Sandpiper - Calidris ferruginea C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 1,000 seen at Seragoon on the 4th.

 

Crested Tern - Sterna bergii cristata C

Seen on six dates in small numbers with a daily maximum of 10 seen at Jason’s Bay in Malaysia on the 30th. We saw this species on every visit to Punggol Road.

 

Roseate Tern - Sterna dougallii bangsi C

A single individual was seen following a large boat off the northern end of Punggol Road on the 28th.

 

Black-naped Tern - Sterna sumatrana sumatrana C

We saw 3 from the boat returning from St. John’s Island on the 23rd and 9 following the boat off the northern end of Punggol Road some of which remained to feed in the area. Superb.

 

Common Tern - Sterna hirundo longipennis C

We saw 2 following a large boat off the end of the Punggol Peninsula on the 28th.

 

Little Tern - Sterna albifrons C

Seen on eight dates with a maximum of 60 seen at the Seragoon Estuary on the 1st.

 

White-winged Tern - Chlidonias leucopterus C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 50 seen at Seragoon on the 1st.

 

Red Collared-Dove - Streptopelia tranquebarica C

Seen on three dates sat along the fence at the back of Seragoon Sewage Farm with a daily maximum of 50 seen on the 22nd.

 

Spotted Dove - Streptopelia chinensis tigrina C

Seen every day in good numbers.

 

Emerald Dove - Chalcophaps indica indica C

A single individual was seen along the forest trail at Thompson’s Ridge on the 27th and another flew across the road leading through forest to the Zoo on the 2nd.

 

Zebra Dove - Geopelia striata C

Seen in good numbers every day but two.

 

Pink-necked Green-Pigeon - Treron vernans C

Seen in small numbers every day but two with a daily maximum of 10 seen on St. John’s Island on the 23rd.

 

Thick-billed Green-Pigeon - Treron curvirostra C

A small flock of around 8 were seen feeding in a fruiting tree near the chalets at Kota Tinggi in Malaysia on the 30th.

 

Tanimbar Cockatoo - Cacatua goffini C

A single individual of this introduced species was seen in the Botanic Gardens.

 

Yellow-crested (Lesser Sulphur-crested) Cockatoo - Cacatua sulphurea C

This species has been introduced to Singapore. We saw 6 on St. John’s Island, 2 in the Botanic Gardens and 6 on Sentosa Island.

 

Red-breasted Parakeet - Psittacula alexandri C

We saw 2 on St. John’s Island on the 23rd. Introduced to Singapore.

 

Long-tailed Parakeet - Psittacula longicauda longicauda C

A single individual was seen on St. John’s Island on the 23rd and a flock of around 20 were watched feeding at the Lower Pierce Reservoir on the 2nd.

 

Chestnut-bellied Malkoha - Phaenicophaeus sumatranus C

We saw 3 along the Thompson’s Ridge Forest Trail on the 26th, 2 there on the 27th and a single individual along the road leading to the Upper Pierce Reservoir on the 4th.

 

Greater Coucal - Centropus sinensis intermedius C

Seen at Kranji Pumping Station, Bukit Timah Reserve and in the rural district along Jalan Ulu Sembawang Road. Encountered on six dates with a total of 8 birds seen.

 

Lesser Coucal - Centropus bengalensis javanensis C

Seen at the Seragoon Sewage Farm, the Rubbish Dump and along Track 10 through the Pig Farm. Encountered on six dates with a total of 8 birds seen.

 

Brown Hawk-Owl - Ninox scutulata scutulata C

A single individual was heard and seen in the tall trees just outside the Orchid Enclosure in the Botanic Gardens on the evening of the 23rd. Another was heard along the road to the Zoo on the evening of the 2nd.

 

Large-tailed Nightjar - Caprimulgus macrurus bimaculatus C

A single individual was seen and heard just outside the Orchid Enclosure in the Botanic Gardens on the evening of the 23rd and another was heard on several evenings along Anderson road.

 

Black-nest Swiftlet - Aerodramus maximus maximus C

We tentatively identified the darker-rumped Swiftlets seen as this species.

 

German’s Swiftlet - Aerodramus germani amechanus C

This form is afforded species status by Clements 2000 from Edible-nest Swiftlet. Paler-rumped Swiftlets seen on Singapore were tentatively identified as this species.

 

Brown-backed Needletail - Hirundapus giganteus giganteus C

A single individual was seen circling low over the summit of Bukit Timah Hill on the 29th. Superb.

 

House Swift - Apus nipalensis subfurcatus C

Seen every day but one in good numbers and clearly breeding at Kranji Dam. In Malaysia a large flock of c.100 individuals moved over.

 

Grey-rumped Treeswift - Hemiprocne longipennis harterti C

Seen on eight dates with a daily maximum of 20 seen arriving to roost just outside the Orchid Enclosure in the Botanic Gardens on the evening of the 23rd.

 

Common Kingfisher - Alcedo atthis bengalensis C

Seen on six dates with a total of 11 individuals noted.

 

White-throated (Smyrna) Kinfisher - Halcyon smyrnensis perpulchra C

Seen daily with a total of 40 noted.

 

Collared Kingfisher - Todirhamphus chloris humii C

Seen in good numbers every day but one with a total of 42 seen. A daily maximum of 15 was recorded on St. Johns Island on the 23rd.

 

Blue-throated Bee-eater - Merops viridis virdis C

Seen every day but two in good numbers with a daily maximum of 20 seen in the Botanic Gardens on the 23rd. Superb.

 

Dollarbird - Eurystomus orientalis C

Singles were seen in the Botanic Gardens on the 22nd and at the Kranji Pumping Station on the 28th, 5 were seen along the Jalan Ulu Sembawang road on the 1st and 3 were again seen there the following day.

 

Rhinoceros Hornbill - Buceros rhinoceros rhinoceros C

A single individual was seen circling over the Lower Pierce Reservoir before departing south until lost to view. One of the most memorable moments was seeing this bird seemingly attacking a similarly sized White-bellied Sea-Eagle. Totally unexpected.

 

Red-crowned Barbet - Megalaima rafflesii malayensis C

A single individual was seen along the South View trail in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve on the 29th. Other Barbets were frequently heard but never seen.

 

Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker - Dendrocopos moluccensis moluccensis C

We saw 4 whilst visiting the Chinese and Japanese Gardens on the 26th, 2 along the Jalan Ulu Sembawang road on the 1st and 1 there the following day.

 

Rufous Woodpecker - Celeus brachyurus squamigularis C

A pair were seen together along the South View Trail in the Bukit Timah Reserve on the 29th.

 

Banded Woodpecker - Picus mineaceus malaccensis C

Singles were seen at the Lower Pierce Reservoir on the 2nd and in the Botanic Gardens on the 3rd.

 

Barn Swallow - Hirundo rustica C

Very common being seen every day.

 

Pacific Swallow - Hirundo tahitica abbotti C

Very common being seen every day.

 

Grey Wagtail - Motacilla cinerea robusta C

We saw 4 at the Kota Tinggi waterfalls on the 30th.

 

Paddyfield (Oriental) Pipit - Anthus rufulus malayensis C

Seen every day but three with a daily maximum of 15 seen at Changi South on the 25th.

 

Pied Triller - Lalage nigra nigra C

A total of 23 seen over six dates with a daily maximum of 10 seen at Changi South.

 

Yellow-vented Bulbul - Pycnonotus goiavier personatus C

Very common being seen every day.

 

Olive-winged Bulbul - Pycnonotus plumosus plumosus C

Seen on ten dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen along the road to the Upper Pierce Reservoir on the 28th.

 

Cream-vented Bulbul - Pycnonotus simplex simplex C

We saw 2 along the road to the Upper Pierce Reservoir on both the 26th and the 4th, 1 was seen at Kota Tinggi on the 30th and 2 were seen along the road leading to the Zoo on the 2nd.

 

Spectacled Bulbul - Pycnonotus erythropthalmos erythropthalmos C

A single individual was seen at close range at Kota Tinggi on the 30th.

 

Grey-cheeked Bulbul - Alophoixus bres tephrogenys C

A pair were seen in the forest at Kota Tinggi on the 30th.

 

Streaked Bulbul - Ixos malaccensis C

We saw 8 at Kota Tinggi on the 30th.

 

Blue-winged Leafbird - Chloropsis cochinchinensis moluccensis C

A single individual was seen in a fruiting tree near the start of the Jungle Trail in the Botanic Gardens on the 27th. Superb.

 

Common Iora - Aegithina tiphia horizoptera C

A total of 30 were noted over seven dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen at the Bukit Batok Nature Reserve.

 

Zitting Cisitcola - Cisticola juncidis malaya C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 15 seen at Changi South on the 25th.

 

Yellow-bellied Prinia - Prinia flaviventris rafflesi C

We saw 6 near the Kranji Pumping Station and 1 behind the Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 28th and 1 was seen at the area at the end of Track 10 on the 4th.

 

Common Tailorbird - Orthotomus sutorius maculicollis C

Seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of 8 being seen along the Jalan Ulu Sembawang road on the 1st.

 

Dark-necked Tailorbird - Orthotomus atrogularis atrogularis C

Seen on eight dates with a daily maximum of 10 seen along the road to the Upper Pierce Reservoir on the 28th.

 

Rufous-tailed Tailorbird - Orthotomus sericeus hesperius C

A single individual was seen along the Jungle Trail in the Botanic Gardens on the 22nd and 3 were seen along the Jalan Ulu Sembawang road on the 1st.

 

Ashy Tailorbird - Orthotomus ruficeps cineraceus C

We saw 1 on St. Johns Island on the 23rd, 1 in the mangroves at Kranji Dam on the 24th and the 31st and 2 near Kranji Pumping Station on the 28th.

 

Asian Brown Flycatcher - Muscicapa dauurica C

We saw a single individual at Kota Tinggi on the 30th.

 

Oriental Magpie-Robin - Copsychus saularis musicus C

Seen on six dates in small numbers with a daily maximum of 5 seen on Sentosa on the 31st. A pair were often seen at dusk in the Palm valley in the Botanic Gardens.

 

Chestnut-naped Forktail - Enicurus ruficapillus C

A pair were seen early in the morning at the Kota Tingii Waterfalls on the 30th. Stunning.

 

Pied Fantail - Rhipidura javanica longicauda C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 9 seen near the Kranji Pumping Station on the 28th.

 

Asian Paradise-Flycatcher - Terpsiphone paradisi affinis C

Singles were seen along the trail at Thompson’s Ridge on the 27th and near the summit of Bukit Timah hill on the 29th.

 

Hwamei - Garrulax canorus C

We saw 2 on Sentosa Island on the 31st.

 

Striped Tit-Babbler - Macronous gularis gularis C

Seen on six dates in forest areas with a daily maximum of 20 seen along the road to the Upper Pierce Reservoir and at Thompson’s Ridge on the 26th.

 

Flyeater - Gerygone sulphurea sulphurea C

Only seen on five dates but often heard with a daily maximum of 4 seen in the mangroves at Kranji Dam on the 31st.

 

Plain-throated Sunbird - Anthreptes malacensis malacensis C

Seen every day but one in good numbers with a daily maximum of 15 seen on the 26th.

 

Purple-throated Sunbird - Leptocoma sperata brasiliana C

A pair were seen along the road leading to the Upper Pierce Reservoir on the 26th and 28th.

 

Olive-backed Sunbird - Cinnyris jugularis ornatus C

Seen on seven dates in fair numbers with a daily maximum of 6 seen on the 29th.

 

Crimson Sunbird - Aethopyga siparaja siparaja C

Seen on eight dates with a daily maximum of 10 seen along Thompson’s Ridge on the 27th.

 

Spectacled Spiderhunter - Arachnothera flavigaster C

A single individual was seen in the Children’s Playground at Kota Tingii Waterfalls on the 30th.

 

Little Spiderhunter - Arachnothera longirostra cinireicollis C

We saw 3 in the Bukit Timah NR on the 29th and 2 along Thompson’s Ridge on the 2nd.

 

Grey-breasted Spiderhunter - Arachnothera modesta modesta C

A single individual was being chased by the Spectacled Spiderhunter at Kota Tingii Waterfalls on the 30th.

 

Yellow-breasted Flowerpecker - Prionochilus maculatus oblitus C

A single individual seen in the forest at Kota Tingii Waterfalls on the 30th. It kept low in the forest slowly moving through the undergrowth.

 

Crimson-breasted Flowerpecker - Prionochilus percussus ignicapillus C

A single male was seen around the chalets at the Kota Tingii Waterfalls on the 30th.

 

Orange-bellied Flowerpecker - Dicaeum trigonostigma melanostigma C

A single male was seen near the Car Park at the Kota Tingii Waterfalls on the 30th.

 

Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker - Dicaeum cruentatum ignitum C

Seen on eleven dates with a daily maximum of 40 seen on St. John’s Island on the 23rd.

 

Black-naped Oriole - Oriolus chinensis C

Very common being seen every day with a daily maximum of 20 seen on the 26th.

 

Asian Fairy-bluebird - Irena puella malayensis C

We saw 3 males along the South View Trail at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve on the 29th.

 

Greater Racket-tailed Drongo - Dicrurus paradiseus platurus C

Quite common in forest areas on Singapore where seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen at the Bukit Timah Reserve on the 1st.

 

House Crow - Corvus splendens C

Very common being seen daily.

 

Large-billed Crow - Corvus macrorhynchos macrorhynchos C

Seen virtually daily with a daily maximum of 20 seen at Seragoon on the 20th.

 

Asian Glossy starling - Aplonis panayensis strigata C

Seen daily in good numbers.

 

Javan Myna - Acridotheres javanicus C

Probably the commonest species being seen daily.

 

Common Myna - Acridotheres tristis tristis C

This species proved very common being seen daily.

 

Black-winged Starling - Acridotheres melanopterus C

We saw 8 on St. John’s Island on the 23rd.

 

Tree Sparrow – Passer montanus malaccensis C


Seen daily.

 

Baya Weaver – Ploceus philippinus infortunatus C


We saw 4 at the small pond at the Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 22nd and 8 were seen in the marshes near the Kranji Pumping Station on the 28th.

 

Javan Munia – Lonchura leuncogastroides C


We saw 8 at a small pond outside the Seragoon Sewage Works on the 22nd and 10 there on the 28th.

 

Nutmeg Munia – Lonchura punctulata nisoria C


The commonest Munia encountered being seen on every day but one with a daily maximum of 80 seen on the 22nd.

 

Chestnut Munia – Lonchura atricapilla sinensis C


Only 4 were seen being along the canal cutting across the road to the Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 28th.

 

White-headed Munia – Lonchura maja maja C

Seen on five dates generally in the Seragoon area with a daily maximum of 50 seen at the back of the Seragoon Sewage Farm on the 22nd.
