USA Washington DC    11th August to 24th August 1984

 

11th August : Arrived Baltimore Airport in late afternoon and drove to Rockville spending evening birding.

 

12th August : Drove over the Bay Bridge to Port Mahon and onto Little Creek and finally onto Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

 

13th August : Visited the C&O Canal and Seneca State Park along the Potomac River close to Rockville and on to Sycamore Landing.

 

14th August : Again visited the C&O Canal at Seneca and then onto Alexandra to look at the Potomac there. We then returned to Rockville and walked to some local woods behind the School. In the evening we took a drive out to Hughes Corner.

 

15th August : Drove to Bombay Hook and then on to Little Creek again.

 

16th August : Again visited the C&O Canal and a nearby Turf Farm. Drove into Washington DC in the evening.

 

17th August : Visited the Harrington State Park in the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia and then on to the Swallowtail Falls.

 

18th August : Visited Chincoteague, first checking the migrant patch which is known as the Pony Trail before onto Swan Cove, Snow Goose Pool and finally down to the Hook.

 

19th August : Visited the Sandy Point State Park and then a brief look around the ringing station not far from Rockville.

 

20th August : Visited Chincoteague with a look along the Pony Trail before a look down the end of The Hook.

 

21st August : Visited the Pony Trail and then on to the Wildlife Trail and then on to Swan Cove and another walk to the end of The Hook before driving the Wildlife Trail at dusk.

 

22nd August : First visited the Pony Trail then on to Swan Cove and the Wildlife Trail and then drove Elliott’s Island before back to Rockville.

 

23rd August : Visited the Great Falls Reserve in Virginia keeping to the Swamp Trail and a quick look at the nearby Third Reserve.

 

24th August : Visited the ringing station and then onto the Baltimore Airport for the afternoon flight back to Stanstead Airport.

Only seen twice with 4 seen on the pool at Little Creek near Bombay Hook on the 15th and 1 seen at Chincoteague on the 18th.

Seen on four dates at Fisher’s Point at Chincoteague with a daily maximum of 26 on the 20th.

 

Double-crested Cormorant - Phalacrocorax auritus C

Seen on seven dates along the coast being most numerous at Chincoteague.

 

Great Cormorant - Phalacrocorax carbo carbo C

Only seen at Chincoteague with 1 noted on the 18th and 3 on the 21st.

 

Great Blue Heron - Ardea herodias wardi C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 40 noted in the Bombay Hook / Little Creek area on the 15th.

 

Great Egret - Ardea alba egretta C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of an estimated 1,000 seen at Chincoteague on the 21st.

 

Tricolored Heron - Egretta tricolor ruficollis C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 100 seen in the Chincoteague area on the 21st.

 

Little Blue Heron - Egretta caerulea C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 120 seen in the Chincoteague area on both the 20th and 21st.

 

Snowy Egret - Egretta thula brewsteri C

Seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of an estimated 1,000 at Chincoteague on the 21st.

 

Cattle Egret - Bubulcus ibis ibis C

Seen on four dates with a daily maximum of 70 seen at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Green Heron - Butorides virescens C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 15 seen in the Chincoteague area on the 21st.

 

Black-crowned Night-Heron - Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli C

Seen on four dates whilst at Chincoteague with a daily maximum of 40 seen along the Wildlife Trail on the evening of the 21st.

 

Glossy Ibis - Plegadis falcinellus C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of over 500 in the Bombay Hook / Little Creek area on the 12th.

 

Mute Swan - Cygnus olor C

We saw 2 near the Chesapeake Bridge on the 12th and 15th and 6 at Chincoteague on the four days spent there.

 

Canada Goose - Branta canadensis C

Seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of 100 seen at Chincoteague on four dates.

 

Wood Duck - Aix sponsa C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 50 seen at Chincoteague on the 20th.

 

Gadwall - Anas strepera C

We saw 2 at Chincoteague on both the 18th and 21st.

 

Green-winged Teal - Anas crecca carolinensis C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 60 seen at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

Mallard - Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos C

Seen on six dates.

 

American Black Duck - Anas rubripes C

Seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of 300 seen at Chincoteague.

 

Blue-winged Teal - Anas discors C

Seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 100 seen at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

Black Vulture - Coragyps atratus atratus C

We saw 4 at Elliot’s Island on the 22nd.

 

Turkey Vulture - Cathartes aura septentrionalis C

Seen on nine dates with a daily maximum of 50 seen between Elliot’s Island and Chincoteague on the 22nd.

 

Osprey - Pandion haliaetus carolinensis C

Seen on seven dates with a maximum of 5 seen on Elliot’s Island on the 22nd.

 

Bald Eagle - Haliaeetus leucocephalus C

An immature was seen at Bombay Hook on the 12th and 15th and a fine adult was seen on Elliot’s Island on the 22nd.

 

Northern (Hen) Harrier - Circus cyaneus hudsonius C

Seen on four dates at Bombay Hook, Chincoteague and Elliot’s Island with a daily maximum of 8 at the latter site on the 22nd.

 

Sharp-shinned Hawk - Accipiter striatus velox C

A single individual was seen at Bombay Hook soaring with a Bald Eagle on the 15th.

 

Red-shouldered Hawk - Buteo lineatus lineatus C

A single individual was seen along the C&O Canal at Seneca on the 13th and 14th and 2 were seen near the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd.

 

Broad-winged Hawk - Buteo platypterus platypterus C

A single individual was seen at the Harrington State Park in the Shenandoah Mountains, Virginia on the 17th and 2 were seen near the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd.

 

Red-tailed Hawk - Buteo jamaicensis borealis C

Singles were seen in the Shenandoah Mountains on the 17th, near the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd and near Rockville on the 24th.

 

American Kestrel - Falco sparverius sparverius C

Seen on five dates in small numbers with a daily maximum of 4 seen along the C&O Canal on the 16th.

 

Peregrine Falcon - Falco peregrinus anatum C

A single individual was seen at its breeding site on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on both the 12th and 15th and 2 were seen at Chincoteague on the 20th.

 

Northern Bobwhite - Colinus virginianus C

We saw 2 obliging individuals at the Bombay Hook HQ on the 12th and 15th and 14 on Elliot’s Island on the 22nd.

 

Clapper Rail - Rallus longirostris C

A single individual was seen at Little Creek on the 12th and up to 9 were seen on three dates along the road to Swan Cove at Chincoteague.

 

Common Moorhen - Gallinula chloropus cachinnans C

Singles were seen at Little Creek and at Chincoteague.

 

American Oystercatcher - Haematopus palliatus palliatus C

Seen at Fisher’s Point on four dates with a daily maximum of 50 seen on the 20th.

 

Black-necked Stilt - Himantopus mexicanus mexicanus C

We saw 20 at Bombay Hook NWR on the 12th and 30 there on the 15th.

 

American Avocet - Recurvirostra americana C

Seen on four dates with locations being Port Mahon, Bombay Hook and Chincoteague with a daily maximum of 400 seen at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

American Golden Plover - Pluvialis dominica C

A single individual was seen at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Grey Plover - Pluvialis squatarola C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 40 seen at Chincoteague on the 22nd.


Semipalmated Plover - Charadrius semipalmatus C

Seen on six dates in good numbers with a daily maximum of 250 seen at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Wilson’s Plover - Charadrius wilsonia wilsonia C

A single individual was seen on the tip of Fisher’s Point at Chincoteague on the 20th.

 

Killdeer - Charadrius vociferus vociferus C

Small parties were seen on six dates with a daily maximum of 20 seen on the 15th generally favouring farmland habitat.

 

Piping Plover - Charadrius melodus C

At Chincoteague we saw 3 around two miles along Fisher’s Point at ‘The Hook’ on the 20th and 3 there and 3 at the tip of the same point the following day.

 

American Woodcock - Scolopax minor C

We were fortunate to flush a single individual twice in a small wood at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

Common Snipe - Gallinago gallinago delicata C

We saw a single individual at Chincoteague on the 20th.

 

Short-billed Dowitcher - Limnodromus griseus C

Surprisingly it proved the most numerous Dowitcher with good numbers seen on six dates including a daily maximum of 800 seen at Bombay Hook NWR on the 15th.

 

Long-billed Dowitcher - Limnodromus scolopaceus C

We identified 50 at Bombay Hook on the 12th and 50 at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Hudsonian Godwit - Limosa haemastica C

A flock of 10 were seen at Chincoteague on the 18th and (presumably the same flock) had increased to 12 when seen on the 20th, 21st and 22nd.

 

Marbled Godwit - Limosa fedoa fedoa C

Seen in small numbers at Bombay Hook and Chincoteague with a daily maximum of 8 seen at Chincoteague on both the 21st and 22nd.

 

Whimbrel - Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus C

Seen on three dates at Chincoteague with a daily maximum of 7 seen on the 21st.

 

Greater Yellowlegs - Tringa melanoleuca C

Seen in good numbers in suitable habitat with a daily maximum of 150 seen in the Chincoteague area on three dates.

 

Lesser Yellowlegs - Tringa flavipes C

Seen on seven dates in very good numbers with a daily maximum of 500 being seen in the Chincoteague area on two dates.

 

Solitary Sandpiper - Tringa solitaria solitaria C

We saw 2 at a Turf Farm along the C&O Canal near the Senaca State Park along the Potomac on the 16th and 2 at Chincoteague on the 18th and 20th and 1 there on the 22nd.

 

Spotted Sandpiper - Actitis macularia C

Seen in small numbers on seven dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen on the 15th and the 22nd.

 

Willet - Catoptrophorus semipalmatus C

Seen in good numbers at all coastal locations on six dates with a daily maximum of 60 seen in the Port Mahon area on the 12th.

 

Turnstone - Arenaria interpres morinella C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 30 seen at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Red Knot - Calidris canutus C

Seen on three dates with a daily maximum of 200 seen near Port Mahon on the 12th.

 

Sanderling - Calidris alba C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 150 seen along Fisher’s Point on the 20th.

 

Semipalmated Sandpiper - Calidris pusilla C

Seen in large numbers on five dates with a daily maximum of over 2,000 in the Bombay Hook area on the 12th.

 

Western Sandpiper - Calidris mauri C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of over 200 seen in the Bombay Hook area on the 12th.

 

Least Sandpiper - Calidris minutilla C

Seen on six dates in good numbers with a daily maximum of 500 seen in the Chincoteague area on the 18th and 20th.

 

White-rumped Sandpiper - Calidris fuscicollis C

We saw 2 at Bombay Hook on two dates and up to 8 at Chincoteague on three dates.

 

Pectoral Sandpiper - Calidris melanotos C

Seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of 250 seen at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Curlew Sandpiper - Calidris ferruginea C

A single individual was seen at Chincoteague on the 18th and 20th.

 

Stilt Sandpiper - Calidris himantopus C

Seen on six dates in very good numbers with daily maximums of a flock of 300 seen at Bombay Hook on the 12th and 300 seen in the Chincoteague area on the 21st.

 

Buff-breasted Sandpiper - Tryngites subruficollis C

We saw a single individual at Chincoteague on the 18th.

 

Wilson’s Phalarope - Phalaropus tricolor C

We saw 6 at Bombay Hook on the 12th, 8 there on the 15th and 2 at Chincoteague on the 20th.

 

Red-necked Phalarope - Phalaropus lobatus C

We saw 2 at Bombay Hook on the 12th.

 

Ring-billed Gull - Larus delawarensis C

This species proved fairly common in a variety of habitats.

 

Great Black-backed Gull - Larus marinus C

Seen on seven dates in small numbers.

 

Herring Gull - Larus argentatus smithsonianus C

Seen on seven dates in small numbers.

 

Bonaparte’s Gull - Larus philadelphia C

A single individual was seen at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

Laughing Gull - Larus atricilla megalopterus C

Very common in all coastal areas.

 

Gull-billed Tern - Sterna nilotica arenea C

We saw 6 at Chincoteague on the 18th and 2 there on the 20th.

 

Caspian Tern - Sterna caspia C

Seen on six dates in small numbers with a daily maximum of 15 seen at Chincoteague on both the 20th and 21st.

 

Royal Tern - Sterna maxima maxima C

We saw 4 at Chincoteague on the 18th, 25 there on the 20th and 21st and 6 on the 22nd.

 

Common Tern - Sterna hirundo hirundo C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 50 seen at Chincoteague on three dates.

 

Forster’s Tern - Sterna forsteri C

Seen on seven dates in good numbers with a daily maximums of 100 recorded at both Bombay Hook and Chincoteague.

 

Least Tern - Sterna antillarum antillarum C

Seen at Bombay Hook and Chincoteague in small numbers on four dates with a daily maximum of 10 seen on the 12th.

 

Black Tern - Chlidonias niger surinamensis C

Seen at Bombay Hook and Chincoteague on five dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen on both the 12th and 20th.

 

Black Skimmer - Rynchops niger niger C

Seen on six dates in fair numbers with a daily maximum of 30 seen at Chincoteague on the 21st.

 

Mourning Dove - Zenaida macroura carolinensis C

Seen every day in large numbers.

 

Yellow-billed Cuckoo - Coccyzus americanus C

We saw 2 at the Senaca State Park on the 13th, a fall of 7 along the Pony Trail on the 18th and 1 there on the 21st and 6 in the Great Falls area on the 23rd.

 

Black-billed Cuckoo - Coccyzus erythropthalmus C

A single individual was watched sunning itself in the Harrington State Park on the 17th.

 

Barred Owl - Strix varia varia C

We saw a single individual at the Senaca State Park along the C&O Canal on the 13th.

 

Common Nighthawk - Chordeiles minor minor C

We saw a single individual in the centre of Rockville on the 11th and 15 seen in the lights at the major tourist sites in the centre of Washington D.C. during the evening of the 16th.

 

Chimney Swift - Chaetura pelagica C

Seen on nine dates in fair numbers with a daily maximum of 30 seen on the 14th.

 

Ruby-throated Hummingbird - Archilochus colubris C

Seen in small numbers on eight dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen along the C&O Canal on both the 13th and 16th.

 

Belted Kingfisher - Ceryle alcyon C

Seen on eight dates in small numbers.

 

Red-bellied Woodpecker - Melanerpes carolinus C

Seen in small numbers on four dates with a daily maximum of 6 seen along the C&O Canal on the 14th.

Seen on seven dates with a daily maximum of 6 seen along the C&O Canal on the 14th.

JFC saw 3 along the Swamp Trail in the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd.

We saw 1 at Bombay Hook on the 15th, 4 along the Pony trail at Chincoteague on the 21st and 8 in the Great Falls area on the 23rd.

 

Pileated Woodpecker - Dryocopus pileatus C

We saw 2 in woods behind a School in Rockville on the 14th, 1 along the C&O Canal on the 16th and 2 in the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd. Superb.

 

Eastern Wood-Pewee - Contopus virens C

Seen in small numbers on ten dates being seemingly present in virtually all areas of woodland. A daily maximum of 15 were seen along the C&O Canal on the 16th.

 

Acadian Flycatcher - Empidonax virescens C

We saw 1 at the Sycamore Landing along the C&O Canal on both the 13th and 16th.

 

Alder Flycatcher - Empidonax alnorum C

We saw a single individual that had been trapped at a ringing station near Rockville on the 24th.

 

Willow Flycatcher - Empidonax traillii traillii C

We saw 1 in the Harrington State Park on the 17th.

 

Least Flycatcher - Empidonax minimus C

We saw a single individual in the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd.

 

Eastern Phoebe - Sayornis phoebe C

Seen in small numbers on five dates with a daily maximum of 8 seen in woods behind a Rockville School on the 14th.

 

Great Crested Flycatcher - Myiarchus crinitus C

A single individual was seen along the Pony trail at Chincoteague on five dates.

 

Eastern Kingbird - Tyrannus tyrannus C

Seen on twelve dates with good numbers seen on migration at coastal locations with a daily maximum of 60 seen at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

Shore Lark - Eremophila alpestris praticola C

Seen on four dates in small numbers with a daily maximum of 3 seen near the C&O Canal on the 16th.

 

Purple Martin - Progne subis subis C

Seen on six dates often in the vicinity of nest-boxes with a daily maximum of 50 seen on the 22nd.

 

Tree Swallow - Tachycineta bicolor C

Seen on only four dates but in large numbers as there was a heavy passage taking place on those dates with a daily maximum of c.2,000 seen in coastal areas on the 12th.

 

Northern Rough-winged Swallow - Stelgidopteryx serripennis serripennis C

Seen on four dates in good numbers with a daily maximum of 70 seen in the C&O Canal area on the 16th.

 

Sand Martin - Riparia riparia riparia C

Seen in good numbers on five dates.

 

Cliff Swallow - Petrochelidon pyrrhonota C

A single migrant was seen at Bombay Hook on the 15th.

 

Barn Swallow - Hirundo rustica erythrogaster C

Seen every day in large numbers.

 

Golden-crowned Kinglet - Regulus satrapa satrapa C

We saw a single individual in the Harrington State Park on the 17th.

 

Cedar Waxwing - Bombycilla cedorum C

Seen on four dates with a daily maximum of 150 seen near the Great Falls Reserve on the 23rd.

 

Carolina Wren - Thryothorus ludovicianus ludovicianus C

Seen in small numbers on five dates.

 

House Wren - Troglodytes aedon aedon C

A single individual was seen in a Caravan Park near Chincoteague on the 22nd.

 

Grey Catbird - Dumetella carolinensis C

Seen daily in good numbers.

 

Northern Mockingbird – Mimus polyglottos C


Seen in good numbers on ten dates.

 

Eastern Bluebird - Sialia sialis sialis C

Seen in small parties on five dates often near nest-boxes with a daily maximum of 10 seen near the C&O Canal on the 14th.

We saw 2 at the Harrington State Park on the 17th, 1 at the ringing site on the 19th and a family party of 5 at the Great Falls State Park on the 23rd.

 

American Robin - Turdus migratorius C

Seen in large numbers daily.

 

Blue-grey Gnatcatcher - Polioptila caerulea caerulea C

Seen on eight dates often in small parties with a daily maximum of 6 seen along the C&O Canal on the 14th.

 

Carolina Chickadee - Poecile carolinensis C

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 12 seen along the C&O Canal on the 14th.

 

Black-capped Chickadee - Poecile atricapillus practicus C

We saw 12 in the Harrington State Park on the 17th.

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 6 seen along the C&O Canal on the 13th.

A single adult was seen in the hand at the Rockville Ringing Station on the 24th.

A male was seen along the C&O Canal on the 13th and another was seen along the Swamp Trail in the Great Falls Park on the 23rd.

We saw 1 along the C&O Canal on both the 14th and 15th, 1 along the Pony Trail on the 18th and 21st and 1 at Great Falls on the 23rd.

 

Magnolia Warbler – Dendroica magnolia C


Around 10 formed part of a mixed-species flock seen at Harrington SP on the 17th.

We saw 3 at the Harrington SP on the 17th.

We saw 2 along the Pony Trail on the 18th and 20th and a single bird seen in the hand at the Rockville Ringing Station on the 24th.

We saw 2 at Harrington SP on the 17th, up to 4 were seen along the Pony Trail at Chincoteague on three dates and 3 were seen along the Swamp Trail in the Great Falls Park on the 23rd.

We saw 2 in a small wood at Bombay Hook on the 15th and up to twelve on four dates along the Pony Trail.

 

Prothonotary Warbler – Protonotaria citrea C


Only seen along the C&O Canal where they were breeding with 5 seen there on the 13th and 3 there on the 14th.

 

Ovenbird – Seiurus aurocapillus C


Up to 2 were seen along the Pony Trail on the 18th, 20th and 21st.

 

Louisiana Waterthrush – Seiurus motacilla C


We saw 1 extremely well along the C&O Canal on the 13th. Another Waterthrush glimpsed in the Great Falls Park was left unidentified on the 23rd.

 

Kentucky Warbler – Oporornis formosus C


We saw 3 along the Swamp Trail in the Great Falls NP on the 23rd.

Seen in small numbers on nine dates with a daily maximum of 12 seen along the main path bordering the lake at Harrington State Park on the 17th.

We saw 1 at Harrington on the 17th, 1 along the Pony Trail on the 18th, 2 along the Swamp Trail at Great Falls on the 23rd and 2 seen in the hand at the Rockville Ringing Station on the 24th.

 

Worm-eating Warbler – Helmitheros vermivorus JFC


JFC saw 1 along the Swamp trail at the Great Falls Park on the 23rd.

We saw 1 in the hand at the Rockville Ringing Station on the 24th.

We saw 4 at Harrington on the 17th.

We saw 2 at Harrington on the 17th, 4 at Great Falls on the 23rd and 1 at the Ringing Station on the 24th.

Seen on five dates with a daily maximum of 25 seen at Harrington on the 17th.

We saw 1 at Harrington on the 17th and 3 in the Great Falls area on the 23rd.

We saw 15 at Little Creek on the 12th and 20 there on the 15th.

 

Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow – Amodramus caudacutus diversus C


We saw 2 at Little Creek on the 12th and 1 at Elliot’s Island on the 22nd.

We saw a single individual at Bombay Hook on the 12th and 15th.

Seen on eight dates in good numbers.

We saw 1 at Bombay Hook on the 15th and 6 at Chincoteague on the 19th.

Seen on four dates with a daily maximum of 10 seen on two dates near Bombay Hook.

Seen in good numbers on eight dates.

Seen on five dates in fair numbers.

Seen in good numbers at Chinctoeague on four dates.

We saw 1 at Chincoteague on the 18th and 50 on Elliot’s Island on the 22nd.

We saw 4 along the C&O Canal on the 13th and 1 there the following day.
