Looking both large and bulky with a nice long primary projection with its orange-brown throat and breast and buff-suffused underparts

Easy when in close proximity to the above richly-coloured male but appearing reassuringly large and bulky, large-headed and large-billed

In addition to the rather obvious plumage differences the slightly smaller size, more compact shape and short-necked appearance are all discernible

 A white-winged first-winter Herring Gull at Belle Tout

Doing its best to masquerade as a first-winter Iceland Gull...

...same bird as the above but now facing in the opposite direction! (Simon Linington)

Simon obtained good views of the above bird in flight when the difference between its two wings was striking and it was clearly a different bird to the first-winter Iceland Gull picked out by Simon seen passing Seaford yesterday
