7th February 2004 Newhaven and Cockshut Road, Lewes 10.00am – 12.30pm. Sunny but with cold west wind

Fulmar 3 on nest ledges at Newhaven cliffs

Black-headed Gull c.250

Yellow-legged Gull 1 adult Mantle slightly darker and bluer-grey than argenteus Herring Gull. Small eye. White dome-shaped head. Small white spots on black primaries. Legs from some angles looked pink and thick but from other angles bright almost yellowish. Underside of longest primary had black tip with large white mirror but otherwise dark.

Northern Long-tailed Tit 2 caudatus Excellent views in copse with British Long-tailed Tits. Gleaming white heads, pale pink scapulars, pale underparts lacking dark-spotted necklace of British Long-tailed Tits. Tertials and secondaries primarily white. Superb.

1st February 2004 Cockshut Road, Lewes and Newhaven 9.30am – 11.30am. Overcast with moderate west wind at Newhaven

Black-headed Gull c.100

Yellow-legged Gull 2 adults Both looked very similar in appearance. Mantle slightly darker and bluer-grey than accompanying argenteus Herring Gulls. Eye appeared smaller and darker though still a pale iris. Head completely white. Bill yellow with red gonys spot. Legs yellow. Smaller white spots on primaries than argenteus Herring Gulls. Underside of longest primary had black tip with large white mirror but otherwise dark.

Northern Long-tailed Tit 1 caudatus fairly brief views in the copse with a party of British Long-tailed Tits all of which soon moved off west.
