Itinerary
13/12 Arrived Quito at 11pm from our connecting flight from Houston and were met and transferred by the Tandayapa representative to the Hostal Ebanos where a simple double room cost US$20.
14/12
Left Quito at 6.30am arriving at Tandayapa Bird Lodge at c.1,700m at 7.30am. Watched
the Hummingbird feeders on the veranda until 11am whilst enjoying the views of
the valley as a backdrop. Then walked the Potoo Trail and the start of the
Antpitta Trail but it started to rain so returned to the Lodge. On brightening
up we went for an evening walk along the short Tanager Trail.

Hummingbird Feeders at Tandayapa Bird Lodge
15/12
Left the Lodge at 6am and spent 2 hours along the Potoo Trail. Back to the
Lodge for a quick breakfast and then back along the Potoo Trail, the Antpitta
Trail and up the Nunbird Trail with a quick look along the start of the Toucan
Trail before returning to the Lodge. Back out at 3pm walking the entire Potoo
Trail, crossing the Cock of the Rock Bridge and returning to the Lodge along
the Entrance Road.
16/12
Walked the Potoo Trail, the entire Antpitta Trail, returning to the Lodge via
the Cock of the Rock bridge and the Potoo Trail. Spent the afternoon walking
the Platform Trail several times.
17/12
From 6am to 8.30am walked the Platform Trail twice, the Tanager Trail twice and
along the entrance to the Potoo Trail. After breakfast we walked up the main
road to Bella Vista Lodge with the weather deteriorating into heavy rain by the
time we reached Bella Vista. Enjoyed a cup of coffee watching their Hummingbird
feeders before meeting the owner who invited us to walk his Trail C back to the
Main Road before walking back down to Tandayapa.
18/12
A very wet day. Walked the Platform Trail and then the Potoo and Nunbird Trails
before returning to the Lodge. Sat out the wet afternoon watching the
Hummingbird feeders.
19/12
Walked the Nunbird Trail and back by 8.30am. Then walked the Platform Trail and
Tanager Trail before twitching a perched Oilbird along the Upper Link Trail,
not far from the end of the Nunbird Trail, before returning back down the Potoo
Trail.
20/12
Left Tandayapa at 4.30am arriving at a foggy Puerto Vincent Macdonald (PVM) by
6.30am where birded the roadside remnant forest patches to the unwelcome
background noise of busy chainsaws until midday by when the fog had all but
cleared. Drove to Mindo Lindo where it was raining heavily so watched the
Hummingbird feeders and quickly walked a short Trail before deciding to drive
to Mindo visiting some Hummingbird feeders at a small restaurant. Returned to
Mindo Lindo where still raining, so again quickly walked the short trail before
leaving and driving to Los Bancos where it was also raining heavily. Birded
from the roadside until dusk before returning to Tandayapa.
21/12
Left Tandayapa at dawn for the 90 minute drive to Quito Airport. Met by the
Yuturi Lodge representative and handed tickets before catching our 45 minute
flight to Coca arriving at 10am. Taken to the Oasis Hotel where fitted out with
rubber boots before leaving by motorised canoe for the 4.5 hour trip along the
Rio Napo to the Yuturi Lodge at an estimated elevation of 200m.
22/12
Left the Lodge in the dark at 5.30am for a 1 hour canoe trip to the start of
the Manduro Trail where walked through terra firme and varzea forest for 10
hours before returning to the Lodge by canoe at 5.30pm.
Our home for 10 nights that we also shared with a colony of bats (draping a coat over the mossie net proved partially effective against them peeing on us through the night!), a friendly couple of rats, a meter high ants nest and a tarantula or two.
23/12
Left the Lodge at 5.30am for a canoe trip around the Cariyuturi Lagoon being
opposite the Lodge and down the Rio Yuturi to the Rio Napo arriving at midday
where hitched a ride back to the Lodge in the motorised canoe returning
tourists from Monkey Island. Spent the afternoon around the Lodge and watching
from the Observation Platform situated above the Dining Room.
24/12
Torrential rain all day persisted until the evening restricting birding to the
Observation Platform above the Dining Room and from the Lodge itself. It was
surprising how the water level in the Rio Yuturi rose during this day.
25/12
Left the Lodge at 5.30am for the Rio Napo islands spending the day there before
returning to the Lodge at 4pm. Spent the evening at the platform above the
Dining Hall.
26/12
Left the Lodge at 5.30am for a 1 hour canoe trip to the start of the Sandy
trail where walked for 6 hours before returning to the Lodge. Out again at
3.30pm for a canoe trip up the Rio Yuturi to the start of the Old Tower Trail
where walked to the Tower (which had unfortunately fallen down within the
previous 6 months) returning to the Lodge in the dark.
One of the challenges of birding in primary lowland forest is the very low light levels - this image taken in daylight using flash!

29/12
Left the Lodge at 5.30am walking trails to the Rio Napo and back to the Lodge
for lunch. Afternoon motorised boat trip to Paragua Island at the junction of
the Rio Yuturi and the Rio Napo. Torrential rain ensued so eventually gave-up
and raced back to the Lodge with DC losing his Ranthambhor cap to the river on
the return journey.
30/12 Left the Lodge at 5.30am for the Limon trail returning to the Lodge by midday. Packed ready to leave, getting out again at 4pm to the sandbanks off Paragua Island by motorised canoe.

Left Yuturi Lodge at 2am for a 7 hour motorised canoe trip back towards Coca to
Yarina Lodge at an estimated elevation of 300m. It became a very hot and humid
day. Walked to the Yarina Lodge Canopy Tower in the afternoon.
Yarina Lodge Cabins
1/1
Left the Lodge at 5.30am and walked to the Tower arriving shortly after dawn. Spent
2 hours on the Canopy Tower before returning to the Lodge. Walked the trails in
the vicinity of the Lodge and the Tower before leaving the Lodge at 4pm
visiting the nearby Yarina Lagoon until dusk.
2/1
Left the Lodge at 6am spending until 8.30am at the Lagoon. Then walked the
trails behind the Lodge until 11am and then again from 2.30pm until 6pm.
Another very hot and sunny day.
3/1
Walked the trails behind the Lodge from 6am to 7.30am before climbing the Tower
and spending until 8.45 watching the Canopy. Again very hot and sunny so
decided to spend much of the morning watching from the Lodge Clearing hoping
for Raptors. Spent the afternoon at the Lagoon.
4/1
Left the Lodge at 7am for the 1 hour motorised canoe trip back to Coca. Caught
the 9.30 am flight back to Quito booking into the Hostal Rabida and spending
the afternoon sightseeing in Quito.
5/1
The Hostal Rabida forgot to wake us and had failed to book a taxi so had to
rush by a hastily arranged taxi to the airport eventually arriving in plenty of
time for our flight to Bogota, New York and London Gatwick.

Rufous-breasted Antthrush -
Formicarius rufipectus carrikeri
One
of the highlights of our stay at Tandayapa were brief but unobscured views of a
tape-lured calling bird along the Potoo Trail on the 15th and fine
prolonged views of another tape-lured calling bird where the Antpitta Trail
meets the Nunbird Trail on the 19th with others heard on the 16th
and 17th. The rufous breast almost glowed at times. Stunning.
Striated (Noble) Antthrush -
Chamaeza nobilis rubida
This
proved an incredibly difficult species to obtain views of with us finally
succeeding along the Limon trail at Yuturi on the 30th where tape
playback produced a naked eye glimpse of an individual which quickly walked
across the trail and promptly disappeared but patience was finally rewarded on
a second individual which it took an hour of frequent tape playback yielding
brief glimpses before it finally gave itself up by allowing an unobscured view
of itself as it quickly walked towards us for several memorable seconds ! It was amazing how it kept itself virtually
totally hidden despite being at such close range for so long though its call
often gave the impression it was further away than it actually was. Incredibly
frustrating but ultimately stunning.
Scaled Antpitta - Grallaria
guatimalensis regulus
Heard
on five dates at Tandayapa proving most vocal at dawn with a singing individual
frequently heard on immediately entering the forest along the Potoo Trail but
despite lengthy attempts it was never seen. I finally flushed a bird from the
side of the Tanager Trail which perched almost immediately on a horizontal
branch c.50cm above the ground for several minutes before jumping back to the
forest floor and immediately disappearing shortly after dawn on the 17th
- I later heard it vocalising from the same area on returning down the trail.
Moustached Antpitta -
Grallaria alleni andaquiensis
At
Tandayapa lengthy tape-playback of a calling bird at the junction of the
Antpitta and Nunbird Trails on the 15th finally only yielded views
of a ‘chocolate-brown’ silhouette due to the incredibly dark area the bird was
favouring. The following day equally poor views were obtained along the
Platform Trail of a calling bird perched c.3m above the ground as it flew just
as I saw it and was equally quick to fly from the edge of the trail on
relocating it a few minutes later. The species was also heard the following
three days. Clearly this species overlaps with Scaled Antpittas at this
altitude. Moustached Antpitta is treated as Endangered by BirdLife (2000) due
to its ‘very small range which is contracting as a result of continuing habitat
destruction and fragmentation’ although Ridgely & Greenfield (2001) suggest
that Vulnerable status is more appropriate ‘now that the species’ range is
known to be considerably more extensive’.
Ochre-striped Antpitta -
Grallaria dignissima
At
Yuturi after an hour of trying to tape-lure a calling bird into view alongside
a mosquito-ridden damp area along the trail leading to the Rio Napo we
eventually obtained superb views of a single individual watched flicking over
leaves at close range for several minutes seemingly unconcerned by our presence
on the 29th. A spectacular Antpitta.
Rusty-belted Tapaculo -
Liosceles thoracicus erithacus
Singles
were seen at Yuturi along the Manduro Trail on the 22nd and on the
28th. Superb.
Ash-coloured Tapaculo -
Myornis senilis
A
single male was seen hopping alongside and then crossing the Potoo trail at
Tandayapa on the 14th. Although this appears on the altitudinally
low side for the species the bird was seen well and its long tail left few
