A single male showed down to 15 yards along the first ridge in the forest below Gapte on the 10th and a female was flushed from the same area the following day and was seen to fly down the ravine. Although JFC obtained superb views of the male DC was left disappointed as his views were largely obscured by a fallen tree. This species is listed as Near Threatened by Birdlife International (Collar et al. 1994). Rather depressingly when our guide asked local villagers about the presence of this species in the area he was repeatedly told that they were common up until ten years ago but have since been widely shot for food. In addition to this he was told that they are being snared around Thare Pati. Along with the degradation of the habitat above Syabru principally by grazing goats, sheep and cattle the future looks bleak for this species in this area and no doubt others throughout Nepal.

A stunning singing male was seen at the last boulder strewn moraine before reaching Thare Pati on the 12th.
