Blackpoll Warbler at Bewl Water (Podster)
On hearing the news of this Dendroica late on a Sunday evening a sleepless night ensued but amazingly only three observers were present at dawn on Monday when fortunately it didn't take long for us to find this obliging bird. JFC was in Australia but it lingered long enough for him to see it on his return just prior to the birds disappearance.

Grey-tailed Tattler at Burghead (Alan Tate http://www.aabirdpix.com/)
Having been found the day before I made the long drive north accompanied by RJF & JWK. Plenty of birders were present at dawn overlooking a cold, grey and pebble-strewn beach devoid of any waders. Checking the nearby wave platform also drew a blank so we set off along the nearby beach checking the rock pools and there it was! A few waves to the crowd and everyone present were soon watching this very obliging second for Britain and the Western Palearctic. JFC was abroad at the time, but after his return, we accompanied Pete Neatherway on another enjoyable successful visit.

Drake Lesser Scaup at Lechdale (JFC)
Having painfully dipped birds in Dumfries in 1990 and Dorset in 1992 another chance offered itself and along with Pete Neatherway I finally succeeded in seeing this drake that was only the eighth for Britain & Ireland... and then they became far more regular!

Blyth's Pipit at Landguard (Brian Small)
After a morning at Beachy the 'possible Blyth's Pipit' was still present at Landguard so I drove north and joined the small crowd watching it performing well on the Common. A few days later it was taken by a Kestrel. A few days later still rumours were rife the bird had been trapped and it was a proven Blyth's. At the time it was only the second Blyth's Pipit to be accepted in Britain after the Sussex bird in 1882. Retrospectively four more were accepted from the late 80's and early 90's one of which we had dipped on a day trip to St. Marys in October 1993.

Myrtle Warbler on Ramsey Island (D. Woodhead)
After an overnight drive with JK on arriving near the harbour we asked a young lady on her way home from a pub for directions and she kindly offered us a place to stay. Instead, keen on finding the harbour car park, we slept in the car and awoke to a windy dawn. There was much talk of the boat to Ramsey not running, but it did, even if a little hair-raising on an inflatable in the choppy seas! There were no trees on Ramsey so the Myrtle Warbler was hopping around on the ground alongside a small stream affording superb views. Getting back aboard the inflatable required a leap of faith off the small quay/cliff as the tide had gone out but somehow everyone avoided mishap! Three Irish records aside, it had been a long nine years since the duo on the Isles of Scilly but at last the wait for this Dendroica was over!

Ruddy Shelducks on the Hayle (Steve Young)
The Autumn of 1994 produced a decent influx of Ruddy Shelduck with these being two of a flock of six seen on the Hayle. Despite birds associated with historical influxes of the species being afforded a place on the British list unfortunately the events of Autumn 1994 weren't enough to convince the BOURC of a wild origin for these birds.

Yellow-browed Bunting on St. Agnes (Rob Wilson)
Having heard ARK recount his finding of the Yellow-browed Bunting on Fair Isle in 1980 and RJF successfully twitching it from Scilly this mythical Far Eastern species was high on our most-wanted list. A sense of disappointment prevailed when the North Ronaldsay bird of 1992 didn't linger long enough to allow Steve Mawby's plans to fly onto the island to come to fruition. So, a chance of seeing the fourth for Britian on St. Agnes was too good to miss so we made the overnight trip on the day it was found, but we weren't alone, so had to endure a long queue before getting our chance to see it in a weedy field at the old bird observatory. Fortunately the bird performed admirably all day, and once the pressure was off, we obtained some superb views of it hopping around in the open on the ground at close range.

SONG SPARROW 1 ex.

Song Sparrow at Seaforth Docks (Alan Tate)
An organised twitch into the secure docks at Seaforth where everyone was kept well back from a scrap metal heap from where the bird popped out soon after dawn onto a nearby spoil heap. Views weren't close so Alan did extremely well to obtain the above image. Particularly sweet having resisted the temptation of the (successful) boat trip to Fair Isle in '89.

First-winter Greater Yellowlegs at Rockcliffe Marsh (M. Cottam)
The chance of 'a double' hasn't presented itself very often so the chance of doubling-up Britain's seventh Song Sparrow with a Greater Yellowlegs both being found on the 15th October was very welcome.

First-winter male Red-throated Thrush at Walton-on-the-Naze (Dave Stewart)
First found on the 29th I left work immediately and travelled up with JK but we spent until dark fruitlessly searching for it. Not expecting it to stay meant another early departure from work the next day(!), and after what felt like was going to be a repeat of the day before, we eventually saw it well feeding in hawthorns. Being the first for Britain, JFC left Shetland for it, and thankfully it remained it situ allowing him to see it.

Aquatic Warbler 1 adult ex.

Adult Aquatic Warbler in the Cuckmere (Neil Morris)
On hearing of a report of an Aquatic Warbler in the Cuckmere from the day before, I left Beachy, but didn't have any idea of where to check in the Cuckmere. However, whilst walking a juncus-filled ditch, I saw a Warbler fly ahead of me and was greeted by the above beauty. Promptly putting out the news many observers managed to see this obliging bird before dusk. The streaking to its breast-sides and flanks age it as an adult.

Baird’s Sandpiper 1 juv.

Baird's Sandpiper at Eyebrook Reservoir (J. Wright)
A day twitching a Siberian Thrush in Norfolk and a Yellow-breasted Bunting at Filey with RJF seemed a far more attractive option than a day spent at work but with no sign of the Zoothera in Norfolk and with negative news then received from Yorkshire we somehow ended up at Eyebrook in Leicestershire where it poured with rain and we only obtained distant views of this Baird's Sandpiper. Whilst in Norfolk, RJF trying to eat jelly with his fingers having forgotten a spoon gave us all, not least RJF, a few laughs so at least lifted our mood!

KENYA     8/7/94 - 24/7/94

Ostrich - Struthio camelus massaicus C

Recorded on nine dates being seen in Nairobi NP (where S. c. molybdophanes (the most distinct form - ‘Somali Ostrich’) was introduced in the early 1970s and has bred with wild S. c. massaicus producing fertile hybrids (although this appears to be doubted by Zimmerman et al. (1996), who state that in the absence of records it is not known if the resulting offspring were fertile) and thus rendering specific rank for any form therefore doubtful (Brown et al. (1982)).), Tsavo West, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara with a daily maximum of 20 recorded at Nairobi NP on the 9th. Unfortunately we failed to see ‘Somali’ Ostrich S. (c.) molybdophanes at Samburu, which Zimmerman et al. (1996) draw attention to work (Freitag and Robinson (1993)) ‘that investigations show that considerable mitochondrial DNA divergence between it and other forms, which in combination with morphological and ecological differences and reported interbreeding difficulties, suggests that separate species status is probably warranted’. In del Hoyo et al. (1992) they do not accord separate species status but do note that ‘race molybdophanes might be a separate species’. However Clements (2000) treats all forms as races of a single species.
